Tom, I thought you moved from Fort Salonga ("Northport, NY 11768" mailing address)?

It's ok, but bordering on bad areas. In your own immediate vicinity you're ok. But don't venture too far walking. Pulaski and Depot intersection and the streets with lower numbers are out and out dangerous. When I go to visit my friend in Greenlawn and I drive thru there late at night, I slow down at red lights and then proceed if there are no cops around. I won't sit at a red light there. If there was a cop, I am pretty sure I'd get off with an explanation.

I lived in HUntington for many years too and agree with this, in fact have had similar experiences.
The other areas you mentioned in Greenlawn are a much nicer area. I think Elwood is supposed to be pretty good too.

I too am in my starter house, 10 years later........................We loved it when we first moved in and then things started to change and now we can't wait to move. Things do change and more than likely they will, usually not for the better. Sorry.

For those who may not be familiar with Elwood

Because Elwood is in the service area of 5 different ZIP Code postal zones -- "Huntington, NY 11743", "Greenlawn, NY 11740" "East Northport, NY 11731", "Commack, NY 11725" and "Dix Hills, NY 11746" -- and, there is no "Elwood, NY" mailing address, many are unaware that Elwood is an actual community.
For those who may not be familiar with Elwood:
Elwood is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Elwood in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Greenlawn and the Hamlet of East Northport; on the east by the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Commack; on the south by the Hamlet of Dix Hills; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Greenlawn.
Elwood is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Elwood have a "Huntington, NY 11743", "Greenlawn, NY 11740" "East Northport, NY 11731", "Commack, NY 11725" and "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

The thought of my family or my friends having to drive RTE. 110 between Jericho and the train station to get to my house would be would be too embarrassing for me to even consider buying in Huntington Station.

There are many other options to go North/South, unless you live on a dead end street off NY Avenue.
There are also many other areas in Huntington Station that are not in the vicinity of NY Avenue

You never stated your budget but the triangle area (especially by Birchwood School) is really nice. I think it is actually considered Melville, but many homes are reasonable right near school. The maplewood area is also really nice. And I also stated earlier Cold Spring Terrace is really nice, and Huntington zip code. There are also really upscale areas of Huntington Station such as Point of Woods. In addition across from the mall (the "tree" section) is considered nice. Elwood school district is very desireable, but there can be some not so great sections. For many towns on LI that is the case. You can be a few miles from a million dollar home and be in a not so great area in and around Huntington. You need to drive around the area you are buying in to get a feel for it. Good luck.

North of Wolf Hill Road is South Huntington (11746 zip, Huntington Station address), south is Melville. Nice area, I grew up around there and went to Birchwood.
The area you're looking at is OK; wouldn't be my first choice. Again, keep in mind that South Huntington doesn't exist according to the USPS so a "Huntington Station address" isn't that meaningful in terms of resale. It's a very large area, postally speaking, and anyone buying knows to check the location.

Definitely not an area that I would want to live in. You and your family will not be comfortable there, in my opinion.
Take a look and see if anything is up for sale near Huntington Harbor in the Glen-a-little Trail area. The houses are very small, but the area is terrific, and you'd be very close to one of our town beaches as well. As far as schools go in district 3, they're okay until HS when most people take their kids out of the system and steer them to a private school.
