Not really lots of Sketchy people all over the island. I very rarely encounter anyone I'd deem Sketchy
here in Manorville, nor do I in Eastport, Speonk, Calverton, or any of the surrounding communities.
It's more of an upisland problem

Sketchy people (bums, public drunks/public burnouts) are attracted to places with a walkable central downtown because they don't drive. The places you mention don't have sketchy people because they have no downtown, unlike, Patchogue, for example. If people have this problem in their towns, it's because they have some part of the town with a cluster of stores and a sidewalk.

I have definitely noticed more bum-type people around the train station (maybe 2 or 3 of them standing around separately or having a smoke in the morning, etc.) in the last year but have not seen this affect any other areas in Hicksville more than it already was. Still feeling pretty good about the town as a whole, as long as you're only at the LIRR area to drop off / pick up. I also wait 5-10 minutes around 5pm around the train station everyday and with all the activity, none of anything bad is even seen.
Where were you specifically? It's not like it's a haven for crime.
And someone mentioned Syosset. I'd also like to hear what's wrong with Syosset... is this just isolated areas? Some people make it out to sound like there is no more middle class suburbia around anymore. Un-objective opinions are annoying. I know there is a spreading problem island-wide but babbling about doom & gloom in every post is just as annoying.

I didn't know that communities west of Riverhead, i.e. Manorville and Calverton, weren't considered up island.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is 'upisland', I've never heard that term before.

If you look at a map of Long Island you will see that the island doesn't really lie east to west, it points a bit northward.
So technically if you're on the LIE in western suffolk, you go "up island" to Riverhead.
Ok I know, bad joke.
But i'm in a weird mood today.

You do have a fair amount of drifters and migrant farm labor out east though.
Theres plenty of sketchy in Riverhead and Greenport.

What you guys are describing has already happened in much of Southern California. There is one big giant reason for it and it is the same reason in CA as it is on LI.
It is a lack of affordable housing, the loss of good-paying non-white-collar jobs (usually manufacturing jobs), and the resulting slow but steady exodus of the middle class and their grown children, and a slow but steady influx of low-skill, low-education-level workers (of all races) who are taking their place.
California and is much farther ahead than LI this trajectory... but the end result is the same - a bifurcated society where the wealthy use money and discriminatory tax and housing code to keep their enclaves nice - while middle class neighborhoods decline into trashed rental neighborhoods, chopped-up houses, and eventually, the crime, trash, and noise that follows.
The best bet is to either bite the bullet and buy into an insulated, wealthy area or move to a city with growth and enough affordable housing that the pressure on the middle class is lessened to the point where they can succeed. Most of those cities are in places like the mountain west, southwest, and southeast.
