Absolutely true but it just shows that distance is no obstacle. And in the end, the prime target for this demographic is not large suburban homes but small homes in working-class neighborhoods.
IMO Long Island is not susceptible to this because it has an older, wealthier, more established working and middle class than California does. Much of CA's urban middle class relocated out of the cities in the 80's and 90's. Californians do not tend to add-on to their homes the way that NY'ers do, they move to new big houses farther away.

What is "M&M?" "Millionaires and their Minions?"
A lot of middle class Californians have left the state.

"Upisland"
Just to clear some confusion about my use of the term "Up-Island."It's a bit archaic but nonetheless part of the dying LI vernacular. When sombody says "Up-island" it often refers to west of where they are from, or Western Suffolk and Nassau.
Mainly it depends on geography. for someone from Springs or Montauk,it could mean anything West of the Shinnicock Canal. For someone like myself in Manorville, it means pretty much everything West of here, or just shorthand for more densely populated communities with amazing technological advances such as sidewalks, sewers, and streetlights. (sorry i had to lol)
As for what the East End really is, it's hard to place a geographic line to separate "Out East" from "Up Island" It's really a cultural thing. Manorville, even with it's recent population boom, still enjoys a very low population density and high amounts of preserved land and farms, giving it an East End feel. (along with people in brooks brothers and range rovers filtering through town all summer long) I think Manorville looks more like some communities way out on the forks than the ones directly next to it.
Personally I think the East End begins by the Maples here in Manorville, that is where the train station was originally located, and where travelers would historically switch trains depending on which fork they were heading to.

As someone who has lived in Hicksville before, I really think it's still a great place for middle-class residents. Unless things changed drastically since 2006, I think a lot of the stuff people are saying is either overexaggerated or deliberately negative towards foreign-born people (whether they are legal or not)...
It may depend on neighborhood though.. I lived in the Lee Avenue area which was really nice and I felt safe taking walks around the neighborhood and whatnot. The median family income in Hicksville is about $75K or something like that..sounds like middle class to me.

lol great reply, I like to drink on occasion but don't frequent the krack pipe although did my fair share of partying in my 20's. Rocky Point has improved dramatically and I love the area. On a side note they should renovate that shopping center in Shoreham I hate how each store has a different sign. It would be nice if they made it more uniform. Remember when just the Cherry Tree shop and eddie and Janets deli was there? Well your reply was good and gave me a good laugh this website is great by the way....

You hit the nail on the head thats just what i meant. Tommy's is nice, Carussos has great food, and that CVS looks great too. I think there must be an influx of Section 8 or something because I have seen more sketchy people recently east of broadway. My sister lives on one of those streets and I visit often so just an observation. Who knows maybe my sister is sketchy too, lol or im sketchy and just don't know it....

The LIRR station in Long Beach is a drug haven, UC's are always busting somebody there. Its great when u take the bus home after work to the west end and 2 prison buddies reminisce about the good-ole times in the Big house.
I cant wait to sell and get my family out of this town and hopefully out of Long Island. Rising taxes declining services blah blah blah, gotta sell.

The Broadway area was almost pure rental when I moved out here.
Not so much anymore.
Overall the towns come a real long way, great place to live.
(Carusos is awesome BTW)
Like I said ....sketchy is everywhere.
The recessions brought out the worst in Brookhaven.

We also don't have the numerous failed exurb housing developments where ill-prepared and ill-financed landlords are renting large homes with built in swimming pools to formerly inner-city Section 8 and public assistance recipients like CA does because thankfully we don't have the land.

The article that was linked on this thread is about one city/area in California.
Yes we have some desperate home owners who what to maintain their financial position and may do as the article implies.
I currently live in Southern California and I’m not sure I’ve seen what you‘re implying or have experience in All of California.
It’s such a large state

My in-laws live in Coram. I was visiting from Texas last week and staying over there. I went to a bachelor party and made plans to stay with a friend that night.
5AM rolls around and someone is knocking on my in-laws door. Now they live in Coram and they NEVER open the door for anyone but they thought it was me coming home (I would have called if I was coming home so they could unbolt the garage).
There's this dude at the door saying "I'm not going to hurt you, don't worry. I just got beat up and I need to get to the Hess station @ 112 and rt. 83. Can you give me directions?"
My Dad in-law pointed him in the right direction and sent him on his way. He looked out the window as the guy was leaving and he went in the opposite direction.
They'll be selling and moving to Texas soon.
