towns in the middle of Stony Brook and Islip?
Hey. I am a student from Stony Brook university. I have an internship in Islip. I currently live in Lake Grove. But I get tired of being stuck in traffic when I drive to Islip. Especially school starts in August and I will have to go back and forth from Stony Brook to Islip. I am looking to move somewhere in the middle of Stony Brook and Islip. But I kinda have no idea where is good. Anyone have any idea? Thank you.

Understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland"
millin, the Village of Islandia in the north-central part of the Town of Islip is halfway along the diagonal connecting the Hamlet of Stony Brook in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven and the Hamlet of Islip in the southwest part of the Town of Islip.
In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
When you do find a place that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that place is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that place's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

Gee, I'm kinda thinking Lake Grove is in between Islip and Stony Brook, no?? Perhaps a bit east of a direct line. Do you use Nichols Road to go north and south??

Ronkonkoma Hauppauge or Smithtown is probably your best bet. You can be in either side in 20 minutes. It would make it slightly easter to be WEST of SB, that way at least one of your commutes don't deal with the teeth of rush hour traffic. The most central towns are actually Central Islip and Brentwood, and you could probably get a really cheap rental there, but those areas...suck. Google Brentwood shooting.

It's much closer to Stony Brook and east, and makes the commute to Islip be with rush hour traffic. The trip would be much easier from a point due north or even slightly west.

PONYPULR, according to my map, the southern border of the Hamlet of Stony Brook is the northern border of the Village of Lake Grove.

Hauppauge is your best bet. Good schools and low taxes as well.
I'm assuming your commuting pattern now is to take Sunrise Highway to Nicholls Road and head north (and vice versa). If you lived in Hauppauge in, say, the "Bird Section", you could hop onto the LIE to Nicholls Rd and then take exit 62 north. Or if you were in the area of Hauppauge near Hidden Pond Park (off Terry Road) you could head east on 347 and pick up Nicholls Rd north from that intersection.
Obviously you need to look "on the diagonal" between Stony Brook and Islip because if you go straight south from SB you'd be talking about Lake Grove/Centereach/Selden and then as you get farther south, Bayport/Blue Point. And going straight north from Islip you have Brentwood, Hauppauge, and Smithtown in that order.

My map shows that going straight south from the Hamlet of Stony Brook would be the Village of Lake Grove, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkma, and then crossing the Brookhaven/Islip town line, the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma, the Hamlet of Bohemia, the Hamlet of Sayville and the Hamlet of West Sayville.

Here, going straight north from the Hamlet of Islip, my map (and yours agree on this one) shows the Hamlet of Brentwood or the Hamlet of Central Islip, and then crossing the Islip/Smithtown town line, the Hamlet of Hauppauge, the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Village of Nissequogue.

Key factor here is what the persons budget is. Apartments in Hauppauge are at a premium price because of how close they are to the industrial park. Central Islip, while crap, might be okay for a year or so for someone going to college. I mean, people live in friggin Baltimore and go to expensive private schools. 90% of Baltimore is a hell hole.
I'd check out Heatherwood at Lakeland in Ronkonkoma..that would be pretty central.

I would actually use OLD Nichols Road as it runs diagonally from Islandia to Lake Grove and is a pretty road to drive on.
