Moving to Long Island
I am going to work in Rockville Centre and looking for a good area to live. I am looking to rent an appartment. I am looking to spend no more than 1500 a month for an appartment.
Where can you get the most for your money?? What are some good areas to look?? I would not mind finding a place closer to Queens or Brooklyn.
Are there any places I should avoid???
I appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

You are single without kids? I would look in Rockville Centre. Save yourself on the commute and its a great area. Garden City South is also nice.

For those who may not be familiar with Rockville Centre
nycguy, I second renting in the Village of Rockville Centre.
In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
When you do find a place that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that place is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
You may not need it now, but very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.
For those who may not be familiar with Rockville Centre:
Rockville Centre is a village (incorporated in 1893) in the center of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Rockville Centre in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Lakeview and the Hamlet of South Hempstead; on the east by the Hamlet of South Hempstead and the Hamlet of Baldwin; on the south by the Hamlet of Oceanside; and, on the west by the Village of East Rockaway, the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Lakeview.
The Village of Rockville Centre has a different border than does the "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address and not be in the Village of Rockville Centre): most of these places that have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address that are not in the Village of Rockville Centre are in the Village of Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Lakeview.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

If you are a 'youngish' guy looking for a somewhat happening 'in the LI sense' town nearby with a lot of bars and younger people ... do Long Beach without a doubt. Plus its a nice beach community in the summer as well. If you are just looking for a cheap place to stay, look on craigslist for what is most likely an illegal apartment and you can probably find something pretty affordable with utilities including in most of the surrounding towns.
