Default Captree State Park

Hi, we are interested in going crabbing and fishing at the pier at Captree State Park. Do I need a permit to fish and crab at the pier?

A few years ago, I was able to go without a permit. Not sure if things have changed.

Thanks!

I hear the DEC is going to be requiring saltwater permits starting in the fall. I think its something like $5 per day, $10 per week, $30 per year.
Just another way for the state to seperate people from their money.

Depends on what you like to do. There's photography, charter boats for sightseeing, scuba diving, have a picnic (not sure if you can barbecue though). I'm not sure if you can launch a kayak or a boat there.

The boardwalk itself does extend down Fire Island for a bit, but then you have to take a road. Another boardwalk pops up but i'm not sure exactly where. Basically you can walk/ride a bike from the lighthouse to Kismet. Figure on walking about 2 miles one way (4 round trip). Easily done in a day.

Sure. Depends on how old the kid is. If you're talking 7 or 8, yes. If less than that, yes and no. You might have to carry the kid a bit.

On second thought you might want to bring the kid's bike. That probably would help.

Definitely bring a backpack with water (especially for the kid), lunch, a hat for the kid, sunscreen for the kid. Remember, we adults can handle a walk like that, but the kid is not going to do it all in one shot. The kid will need to rest but the good thing is they recover faster than adults.

There are also masks that people wear to bed at night so that no light bothers them. This could be good for the kid if you wish to visit the nude beach. (Just kidding)

On second thought, avoid the nude beach. The first time I ventured out there, I didn't realize it was a nude beach. Let's just say the people there really should have kept their clothes on.

Some people are a little too free and apparently they down own a mirror or a scale.
