Contemporary is synonymous with McMansion on LI. Most homes built in the last 15 years are hideous.

No thats post modern and they suck.

You find a single McMansion on Dune rd but you will find some of the most fantasic contemporary architecture in the world.

FWIW

I love craftsman bungalows too : )

When I hear "contemporary" I think of either a Frank Lloyd Wright style, or a California Ranch, or something that utterly defies description such as a house I once saw up in Fort Salonga that resembled the keel of ship ... definitely "one of a kind"!

As someone else mentioned, the proper term for McMansion is "neo-eclectic", I don't really know the Hamptons at all but I'd bet what you are calling contemporary is actually postmodern. Both terms are used in McMansion real estate listings, and "contemporary" is really more of an umbrella term to describe multiple styles.

Here's a pair of postmodern dwellings in Saddle Rock (on the Great Neck Peninsula). The first one is newer (more "contemporary") since it has lots of glass and uses current building materials, but the second one has a sick view of the Throgs Neck Bridge

Nassau County's North Shore & the Hamptons are really the only place you find these style homes in great numbers on LI.

Yep, we think alike. Well, on this anyway. I don't exactly share your love for the south shore of Nassau County... especially since it doesn't have too many of those beauties. There are some homes very similar to that one in Northport that I like to drool over.

Northport is great, one of my favorite places in Suffolk. Lots of gorgeous Victorian-era homes near the heart of the village.

There are some on the south shore....many in Freeport of all places, Rockville Centre, a few scattered around Bellmore and Wantagh...lots of beautiful and massive Georgian and Federal-style homes in Lawrence. Tudor-style is pretty common in certain neighborhoods...

The north shore does have nicer homes, but it's the people inside of them that count more....and I've got madd love for my south shore brothers and sisters

Here's one of my favorite old homes in Freeport. This picture doesn't really do it justice, this is just a stock photo off mynassauproperty.com....
