The north shore does have nicer homes, but it's the people inside of them that count more....and I've got madd love for my south shore brothers and sisters
Here's one of my favorite old homes in Freeport. This picture doesn't really do it justice, this is just a stock photo off mynassauproperty.com....

Ah! I love that. I am a little bit fond of some of the houses in Freeport and Amityville, but I can't say I'd want to live in either of those towns too much.
Also, I am a south shore sister, somewhat...North Bellmore, born and partially raised. It was great as a kid (well, sort of) but I'm glad I didn't go to high school there. I would have been starting at Mepham around the same time as that football scandal...yep.
But I've always really loved the area around Centre Ave. My pediatrician was on the corner of Newbridge and Linden, so my mom and I would take walks around there. I remember this old pink Victorian-like house seeming very awesome to me at the time, and me saying " Mommmmm why do we have to live where the houses all look the same?"

Craftsman House
I live in one in Atlanta (they're all over the place). I live alone and can't fathom living in one with another person, even though mine is one of the largest models (built 1945).

Victorians are nice, but they creep me out a bit for some reason. I'm not quite sure why.
My preference would be Colonial (either center hall or side hall) and Tudors. A lot of Tudors tend to be dark, but if you get one with a lot of windows with lots of sun coming in, then that is a real gem.
Older homes are great for 2 reasons.
1) They were built with much better materials. The beams and foundation are incredibly thick.
2) They tend to have very high attic ceilings. There is tons of extra living space on the 3rd floor for extra rooms, bathrooms, etc. which is a great bonus. That area also is grandfathered on most tax rolls so you don't end up paying tax on it, even though it very much is living space.

That's so funny, I grew up in bellmore, I know the dr office you are talking about. Can't think of where that victorian pink house is though. Ya, it's alright by Centre Ave...by the water is the most beautiful...that, and the area over by hewlett ave down by the water in Merrick. Massive beautiful houses.

I also do not care for hi-ranches. Its fine if you're young and all but when you get older or even if your parents are elderly, you'll have a tough time climbing the stairs. Also, just moving furniture in, carrying packages in. Stairs become more annoying though.

I grew up in a 1 floor ranch...room right next to my parents bedroom. NO privacy...on my end or theirs. I didn't like being literally on top of my parents and my sister. At least with something like a split-level the rooms are a bit further apart.

The only thing I don't like are split levels...but only the ones that look like there is a "small box next to a large box", not the ones that still look pretty even from the outside.

This house on my block can best described as a Fictorian, in the same vein as fucco. Sure it may be a bit tacky, but it has grown on me, I'd rather have an architecturally "interesting" home any day over a cookie cutter Cape or High Ranch.

I don't know why, but lately I've had this fixation on Dutch Colonials.
I've always loved them, but for some strange reason I've been really into them lately.
I don't think I'd ever own one though. Maybe, but most likely not.
I'm just a die hard Cape guy.
