Can someone explain to me why we don't have a Super Walmart? (Massapequa: how much, square footage)

Perhaps it's the name that is such a turn-off to LI'ers. France has their own chain of SuperWalmarts called Carrefour. When visiting in South America one time I happened to stumble upon one. Very, very similar to Wal-Mart. You would hardly know the difference.

They pulled out of the US entirely in the '90s after only opening two locations (Philly and a town in Jersey).

The hypermarket concept is not done around here because of the lack of available empty space that's appropiate, the high prices for real estate, and political opposition.

I don't have proof, but I was told by a Union worker that Walmart struck a deal with the Supermarket Unions years ago to allow them to build a lot of Walmarts here without having the Unions fighting them.

Honestly, I don't think its the supermarket's fault, and neither is it Walmart's. It almost seems like the manufacturers are colluding to keep prices high and their sizes lower. Walmart can break it because they exist on such a large scale. Most other places cannot.

The Setauket Stop and Shop on the triangle of Pond/347/Nicolls was supposed to be a Carrefour. The structure was built and lay empty for a number of years.

There are a few superstores up here in the Northeast but they are few and far in between as compared to other parts of the country. I think there is only one in Massachusetts, and its in Ware, which is in the middle of nowhere.

I think oneonta, NY had one too...if not, then holy moly that's a big walmart!
