Seriously, is there really THAT big of a savings at WalMart on EVERYTHING, pretty much ALL the time? Because if not, I honestly can't see how WalMart is worth it.
Example: We buy only one kind of spaghetti sauce, Bertolli's Marinara with Burgundy Wine. It's regularly $2.99 at Stop & Shop, which is less than 5 miles from where we now live (before we moved here last year, there was a Stop & Shop less than 2 miles from my house). Assuming that WalMart even carries it (which I've no idea but hypothetically say they do) and that their regular price is $2.50 but since the closest WalMart is 10+ miles away, I'd spend as much or more in additional gas for my car (which averages 18 mpg) to go to WalMart which means I'd actually be saving nothing on the spaghetti sauce. WalMart's prices would need to be significantly lower than Stop & Shop's in order for me to really be saving money, AND WalMart would need to carry almost everything that we normally buy at Stop & Shop (including certain organic brands) to make any trips to WalMart worth my while... and I just don't see that ever happening, even if I thought the stores were anywhere NEAR as pleasant to be in as your typical Stop & Shop. Which IMO they are not, at least not on LI from what I have seen on the few occasions I went into one to buy something for a non-driving friend of ours.
I do put a monetary value on both convenience and the condition of any store. I don't care how much cheaper an item is, if the store is dirty, run-down, a PITA to get to or to park near, or otherwise makes me feel skeevy .... I won't shop there.

Your not really missing anything. Here in Atlanta the prices arent all that much different if at all.and the quality is poorer than most grocery stores.

Ill put it to you this way: walmart sells thier product at the prices supermarkets advtertise thier merchs at as "on sale". ok, say your a coke drinker, the super market sells a 2 liter normaly for $1.79. when its on sale, just about every other week, its a dollar. walmarts everyday price is a dollar. you dont have to wait for a special in walmart. those are thier everyday low prices.

Since we don't have Super Walmart, I just wanted to let you know that the biggest Walmart on LI is Farmingdale. Also Massapequa redid their exterior and is redoing their interior.

I think the reason for no Super Wal-Mart on Long Island. Is a lack of open space and a bad reputation. Wal-Mart has one of the worst reputations of any retailer. If Wal-Mart could change that reputation I am sure there is tons of open space to build one in Suffolk County. Not so much in Nassau County... Unless they develop it like one of the Urban Stores. But I know if they tried to build some urban style Super Wal-Mart in a quaint Suburban community like Nassau County(sarcasm) people would get angry.Off the top of my head, the only piece of open space in Nassau County with enough square footage for a Super Wal-Mart, would be the area in Syosset of Robins Lane. I know they wanted to build a mall their at one point. However, I believe that deal fell through. The only information I found about that area was from wikipedia about lawmakers trying to get the Syosset Train Station moved to that area. It would be interesting to see if Wal-Mart can throw themselves into that conversation.
