Pizza originated in Israel, when Roman soldiers were given matzoh with oil and seasoning during Pesach (Passover).
It took about 1,500 years for the tomato, "discovered" by the Spanish Conquistadors to make its way from the South American Andes Mountains to Italy via Spain and France, to be added.

Your experience was obviously VERY different from mine! Years ago, when traveling through Italy, we stopped at a little place in Naples and asked for pizza... Good thing they brought us a bottle of Chianti long before the pizza came
It was (and remains) the worst pizza ever!!! But with a bottle of wine shared between two, we just laughed and laughed...

I went to Rome last year, and the pizza (both Roman and Neapolitan style) was delicious. I could go back to Italy just to eat.

Not if it's baked and sold in a store that also sells pork products and seafood.

Walter, just curious: Do places like Ben's Kosher Deli not sell anything that contains pork or seafood? For example do they not sell tuna salad (which is a deli staple)? Or do they only have to have completely different containers, utensils, etc for the pork and seafood items than for everything else?
I don't really know much about the kosher laws other than certain foods cannot be mixed with or touch certain others.

That's correct, a kosher delicatessen is prohibited form selling anything that contains pork or seafood.

Tuna is not seafood, it is fish and while German or Italian delis may sell tuna fish, as a general rule, kosher delicatessens do not. Only fish that have scales and gills are kosher; shellfish and other seafood, such as octopus, are not kosher.

Even if kept in separate containers, pork and seafood are not allowed on the premises of a kosher delicatessen.

Judaism 101: Kashrut: Jewish Dietary Laws explains a lot about the ins-and-outs of kosher.
