I have an old Lexus garaged in Pennsylvania. I never take it back to NYS. It is insured and runs well. Can I get it inspected in Pennsylvania? or do I have to drive it back to NY STate.

if it's registered and insured in NY, then it must be inspected in NY.

that might not be the case. i believe (but not 100%) that at least in NYS, a vehicle that is registered in another state but is staying in ny, is supposed to have a NY inspection. its a real grey area tho. so if you are only using the vehicle in PA, u might be able to get a PA inspection, as long as the car is staying there. but then again that might not work because the nys dmv now will not let u renew your reg. if theres no valid nys inspection on file. NY is just a real pain in the a-- with DMV stuff. sorry if i confused you though, but anyway u cant get a nys inpection in pa if thats all u wanted to know.

also, why not just switch it to PA reg. and ins., im sure it will be a bit cheaper

If you have it in PA and you almost never take it back to NY, why don't you switch everything over to PA. Isn't it cheaper?

You cannot register a car in PA unless you have a PA license. In order to get a PA license you must have proof of residency and address. (For extra fun, you are legally required to reregister your car within 21 days of establishing residency in PA, even though hardly anyone has the required documentation within 21 days.) As for insurance, your insurer will not rerate your policy until you send them the NYS plate return receipt and new registration details.

Long story short: Unless you live in PA (or own property and receive bills there), you can't register it there, you can't insure it there, and you need to drive your car to NYS for inspection.
