A trip along Prospect and Union Aves in New Cassel
Someone posted here a while ago on how New Cassel was improving. Well I show you in this video that those new buildings they built along Prospect Ave still sit empty. I guess no one wants to move into them.
Union Ave still has loads of them loitering around really bad, and of course there's still problems in Westbury too, but not as severe. At least our downtown still has mainstream businesses and resturaunts that draw alot of regular people. I cant say the same for New Cassel. Its really a shame.
While Riverhead is still much worse than New Cassel, I hate to see nice new buildings sitting empty. A Chase Bank was supposed to open at the corner of Union and Prospect but I guess it fell through.
I know alot of folks here dont like videos, but its much harder to document whats happening in words, than in pictures.
Yeah, that is definitely true. With that taken into consideration, I think I'm just still surprised that New Cassel doesn't look as bad as I expected, cosmetically at least. I've never actually been there.
How come no video of these new "housing projects" on Union and Maple? Looks the same, those buildings just need to be filled, don't think they can be counted as a negative because they are still new.
Isn't there a part of you that can just accept that some areas aren't going to look how you want them too? There is going to be people around you that arent like you? I bet most of the people that are outside aren't doing anything particularly wrong. Now loitering may be against the law in some cases, but that is usually up to the store owners to call that in. Dont you think if it was such a problem for them as a community they would take care of it? I see plenty of 7-11's filled with white and other kinds of teenagers up to no good all over the island as well.
Would you mind them sitting on benches instead if they where there? Also, i mean this community that you dislike so much has been here only sinces the 90's. I mean have you taken a look at any other minorities, and where they first moved too? 5 points ring a bell?
There is room for improvement obviously. I think the area will improve one day, but it will be by the communities feeling. So what if it becomes a all Spanish area? I mean if a place like Flushing can have all signs in different languages, why couldnt that work in that part of town? It will take time, but John, this is like going into Coach and going why is everything expensive? I mean one day Coach might drop from being fashionable and drop in price, but what is the point of going in there and video taping how expensive it is?
If you really cared about shaping the area, maybe you would save your money and get one of those storefronts and apt, which im sure they would help you out considerably since they want to spur development. That would be the real way to have any impact on the community. Perhaps these people are looking for someone to show them that their community is worth investing in. Maybe one child would come into your store and remember that you took great care of him when you sold him his first whatever product or service. Little things like getting fresh food, opening your first bank account, and not being treated like a criminal before you do anything can help the future more than any ordinace or street roundups (which im sure you would not be opposed to) ever could.
But thanks for the video. Maybe in 10 years we can reference that video and see the changes

How are the people shown in this video not "regular people"?

Yea, I caught that one as well...
Prospect and Union Avenues are going to be pretty much 'Urban' and while it IS taking a long time for the renewal and such, I don't think it's going to be a 180 degree situation. As far as NC and changes go, I see various degrees of how the surroundings are kept. Some (noticed the word some-unfortunatly there are homes where garbage bags sit out all times during the day, yard looks crappy, etc...) blocks have homes that are nicely manicured but unfortunately they are a couple of houses down from an empty storefront.
I think the building on Prospect that goes from the beginning of Brushollow Rd til Rose Place is the best looking one of the bunch (including the Senior Cit. building on Union and the Low/Moderate Income (I think?) building next to it.
The new buildings being boarded up are a perfect example of what I'm talking about. You cant deny the presence of illegal aliens in the area. I bet if they shut down all the overcrowded illegal apartments the neighborhood would improve dramatically. My point is building new buildings alone is not going to gentrify the community. You have to crack down on illegal apts, litter, and loitering, then the community can recover.

(Sigh) The truth is a bitter pill to swallow. If you travel down Union towards Post Ave (near the Westbury LIRR) you will see a shanty town of sorts. I believe there was a house that had a 'For Rent' sign on it for at least a year that has been torn down to my surprise. In those blocks from Union towards Maple near the post office you will find tight blocks with homes squeezed in. Whenever I pass by to visit it makes me cringe a bit. And don't get me started on the blight that is the corner of Grand Blvd. and Monitor St. That hideous white building is ridiculous...
While I still maintain that NC isn't the horror show some may think (or been told), isn't the worst place on LI by a long shot, etc... changes need to be made. How can a village prosper if prospective folks wouldn't be caught dead there by some of the crap they see?
I forgot to mention in my previous post that I wished there was more video of Post Avenue

I originally wasn't going to touch that, but I wonder if John would consider a Latin American immigrant who is here legally to be a "regular" person, or if he really does just mean white people. It seems ridiculous to assume that every Hispanic person shopping around in New Cassel is obviously an illegal living in a flophouse.
