I live in Smithtown and 24 years ago bought a house that had a 6 foot fense. Over the years I put in a built in pool and replaced the 6 foot fence with another one. I live near a school where students running for sports activities run past my home. With all the drwoings on Long Island, I feel it is safer with a 6' fence. I realize that I must have at least a 4' fence, but I feel I'm safer with a 6'. Of couse the town wants me to take it down. (Yes I have a corner house). None of my neighbors want me to take down the 6' fence. If I apply for a varience, they already told me they will deny it. Even as my husband & I tried to fight this, we are coming up loosers. The inspectore told me to take down the side and front of my porperty to 4' which I did, now he says I ahve to take down the back fence. What is happening. Dosen't anyone care about safety. My feeling is unless you fine everyone who has a 6' fence, how can they continue to harrass me.

How about putting in a hedge and letting it grow sky high? Technically it's not a fence, so there's nothing the town can do about a hedge.

PS - The way those pvc fences go up - I doubt any damage would be done - all the manipulation can be done from one side - I doubt they would ever even go in your yard.
You sir, or madam, must make a fine neighbor... and I say that with all intent to compliment.
It's really too bad that more of us aren't like that - having that mind set... if we did, we'd all enjoy our neighbors a lot more...

When I was a child, I remember (and still do today, and I'm far from a kid) every one of my neighbors names on our entire 20+ house block. Everybody knew everybody. They even said hello and did nice things for one another... Today? we're too wrapped up in whatever we're wrapped up in to even know let alone get along with, our next door neighbors.... The world is going to the hot spot in a hand basket.

That tends to happen when people have attached garages, no front porch, in-ground sprinkler systems, and hired lawn care. Homeowner's don't have the inclination or need to be visible to their neighbours. And if they aren't visible...can't get to know them.

Default Replacing existing fence

I want to replace our chain link fence and put up vinyl fencing. Now i know the previous owners put up both sides of our property. Now one side has the poles facing our yard and the other poles face the enighbors yard. I live in the city of Philadelphia PA.

Do I have to get a permit to put up replacements??

Also one of my neighbor has rose of sharon bushes up in which they never cut. The other neighbor has vegetables that grow on my fence. The back neighbor has weeds that grow into our yard. Am i allowed to cut them without asking them??
