Question South Nassau Hospital

My husband and I have recently moved to Nassau county. It appears the doctors that are closest to us are affiliated with South Nassau Hospital.

We are looking to start a family soon and I am curious if this is a good hospital to give birth in. They are currently top rated for the maternity facilities but I am curious if anyone has had personal experience there within the past 2 years, since they did all the re-construction.

Im also curious in Winthrop, North Shore and Plainview if anyone has any informations. it would be apppreciated.

Thanks!

"Good" depends on your POV. None of them are natural childbirth friendly, if that's your thing--South Nassau is the best of that bunch (they don't push natural but they're more accommodating to it if that's what you want), Winthrop the worst in that respect. I haven't given birth in South Nassau, but several friends have and it was fine--I don't think any of them raved about it, but none had any problems.

North Shore has the best high risk facilities, and if you need the maternal-fetal department I strongly recommend it. I didn't use them for birth but I had a preconception consult and they were very good. Plainview has a very small L&D, may not have 24hr coverage (OB and anesthesia called in as needed out of hours).

LIJ is completely redoing their L&D right now.

A lot depends on your OB so interview them and ask a lot of questions to make sure your styles mesh.

Dr. Cheryl Tomack is the best around and is affiliated with South Nassau.

Default Love SN Hospital

I had both my babies in South Nassau. One in 2005 in the old maternity wing and one in 2008 in the new one.

-I feel that your birth experience in regards to natural or not is more in the hands of your OB than the hospital.
- The nurses are amazing
- The new maternity wing is awesome...everyone gets a private room. Wood floors and private bathroom; and it's clean.
- It's a relatively small facility so the nursery is smaller and your baby gets more attention (unless you choose to have him/her in the room with you at all times). In other hospitals, you see a literal sea of babies in the nursery...in SN, there were maybe 4-5 babies each time I was there.
- If your baby needs the NICU (but hopefully not), theirs is wonderful and I felt my baby was very well taken care of.
- they are very pro-breastfeeding and have consultants on hand around the clock. they support you in this effort once you leave the hospital as well, if you choose.

Good luck with wherever you have your baby!

I had all four of my children at Winthrop. My last needed to be in the NICU. I couldn't have asked for better doctors and nurses. The hospital is great!

Winthrop is one of the top rated for maternity. South Nassau is good too.
