Sidewalks or Stops Signs
Has anyone requested either stop signs or sidewalks on their blocks?

Suffolk is tough sue to communty opposition to the "urbanization" of LI.
Its an uphill battle.
Start with a petition from your neighbors for both.

I'm in the town of brookhaven - do you know if I need to submit the petition to the town or other government agency (in NYC it's DOT)

Sidewalks increase your property taxes.
I'm thinking of ripping mine up!

You need to work with your Councilman, present them with a significant petition (100+) then harrass publicly as needed.
Good luck.
Brookhaven and sidewalks are rare.
What town?

Not really
Besides if he ripped them up those meager taxes would be spent elsewhere.

My new street always had sidewalks. I know in Nassau they somehow figure into the tax equation. In reality, I don't think I could legally tear up my sidewalks to knock about 50 bucks off my taxes, ha!
Sidewalks suck. Town owns them. You are taxed on them. You are responsible for their upkeep. You get sued if someone gets injured on "your" town owned sidewalks. What a joke.

I live on a busy road, between middle country road and portion road. Speed limit is posted in only one place and its 30 mph. Drivers are constantly speeding. I was hoping that maybe extra Stop signs or speed limit posters may help.

I am not sure how getting stop signs or red lights works on Long Island but I know that in NYC it is hard to get street lights up. I lived in Queens before moving to Long Island and I know you pretty much needed three fatalities in different incidents at the same intersection within a certain amount of time to get a traffic signal up.
The town of Brookhaven has a large number of roads that can use more stop signs or traffic signals. One example is Woodside Ave. aka County Road 99. It has very few traffic signals between Horseblock Road and Route 112. People fly down it all of the time. There are always a few spots with the flower memorials on the side of the road due to traffic accident fatalities.
