I have not seen any of those types of characters in my part of the country but I have seen them in Las Vegas. We have our own group that are called "pachucos." Well, only one who speaks Spanish calls them pachucos. They don't wear nice clothes nor do they drive flashy cars. They drive cars that are jacked up in the front so that they look like go carts with too much muscle. The private school kids drive the flash.....understated flash, of course.
Anyway, I get the picture. Thanks for the info.
When I think of "Guido" I think of Father Guido Sarducci from SNL.
I can see it now: young Italian-Americans driving around dressing like Father Guido Sarducci in tinted eyeglasses, a black floppy hat, a cape.
Why do you live where you are unhappy? You're the one that should move.
I'm not unhappy. I left this area for about 15 years, now that I am back living here, I can't believe they still exist.
It's like leaving Seattle in the early 90s when everybody was wearing flannel and listening to Nirvana. Then going back in 2005 and everybody is still wearing flannel and listening to Nirvana. These are fads - whether trendy or not. I though the whole Guido thing was a fad. I can't believe it's still going on strong - especially since I really only see it in the NY / NJ area. Something else must be going on to keep it alive.
oh and responding to other comments here: Not all Italian Americans are guidos - also, i agree that Jersey guidos are worse than Long Island ones..

the guidos of today are a bit different than the ones of the 80s. instead of wearing gold chains and driving around in caddys, they wear silver chains and drive around in hondas!

I like my big silver chain, and I drive an acura(which really is a Honda).

In thirty years, they'll be driving Volkswagens and wearing aluminum foil.
