No. All the kids who live there get a bus to Stratford. If you go to Homestead, they did just take some bussing away, but I bellieve everyone who lives west of New Hyde Park Road and south of Stewart gets a bus.

If you live east of New Hyde Park Road, but between Stewart and the RR tracks, those kids no longer get a bus to Homestead. Now that's a tough walk, IMHO.

I think cutting the bus routes is a good thing. People and kids in general should be encouraged to walk more. The neighborhood around there is gorgeous, NY weather isn't bad at all, and it's a nice walk.

Getting kids out of SUV's, buses, and into some fresh air is a good thing IMO. I live about half a mile from Homestead. That's a 10 minute walk and can easily be done.

You don't have to cross Stewart Avenue and/or New Hyde Park Road at rush hour. You also don't have to cross Nassau Blvd, as some Stratford kids now must. If you have a couple of kids and say a baby in a stroller, you would probably re-think it. Especially when you have to dress all those kids in winter/rain gear and hope their feet don't get too wet on the way. Therefore.....

... none of these people are walking. They are all getting into their SUVs and driving.

I don't disagree about taking away the bussing though - prior to this year people who lived on Lee, Wickham and Tullamore were getting a bus to Homestead. They would stand on their streetcorner and the door of the school is clearly visible from the bus stop! My kids' western section bus was the one that picked them up too....I'm very happy that my current Homesteader has a much shorter bus ride.

Thanks for your responses. I have been to mynassauproperty to check on taxes for a few residences in GC. While most of the tax information is available, I cannot find specifics on village taxes. Can you approximate the cost of village taxes? For example, is it a certain percentage of the fair market value? Once again, many thanks.

The village property tax rate is applied to the assessed value to obtain an individual property's village tax. You should be able to get the current village property tax rate from the office of the Village Administrator & Treasurer:

Twingles,

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, I do have to cross Stewart at rush hour (from the LIRR). It's quite an adventure. For as much as we pay the GC police, why can't they actually police Stewart better? It's a raceway between Covert Ave. and Nassau Blvd. I don't mind a bit of speeding over the 40mph limit, but some people are doing 60 and above on that road. Ridiculous.

That said, I was only referring to the kids north of Stewart and east of NHP Rd. Those are the kids that should be walking to Homestead. If they get their feet a bit wet, or some snowflakes fall on them, then so be it. Some parents nowadays are treating their children like porcelain dolls.

You had me laughing when you said that a bus was picking kids up on Lee, Wickham and Tullamore. That's just plain lazy and ridiculous. No wonder our taxes are so high with those kind of inefficiencies.

I don't even like walking along Stewart Ave, let alone crossing it!!!

Just saw a lovely home near (about 6 houses in) from Clinton Avenue, on one of the streets that is essentially opposite Roosevelt Field. My question - Is this house, as pretty as it is, a wise investment? Would it be smarter to find a house further in the Mott section? Are the Mott area houses nearer Clinton Avenue valued the same as those that are closer to Washington Avenue? Thanks!

Mspetter,

I haven't noticed a difference in price to tell you the truth. The homes on the Western side of the Mott section benefit from being closer to the Franklin shops and sometimes being walkable to Mineola train. The homes on the Eastern side of the Mott are closer to the school and it is a quick hop onto the Meadowbrook to get around the Island. So, each side has their pluses and minuses.

My wife and I preferred the Western side of the Mott section when we were looking because we like to be able to walk to places. Just our own personal taste, but many people don't really care.

Hi - Thanks for your comments. They help greatly! Now, let me throw the Country Life Press section into the mix. Are the properties in Country Life Press comparable in value to that of Mott? What about resale? Is one area easier to sell than the other? We're just talking location.
