Sorry for the incomplete subject line - it didn't all fit.

Are people allowed to plant trees on that strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road?

(That same strip that's in the conversation about the neighbor's dog.)

It seems to me that even though homeowners are required to maintain the grass, it is Town-owned property and one wouldn't be allowed to plant trees on it -- thereby obstructing the view of street from sidewalk and sidewalk from street -- without permission. It seems hazardous to me. And an eyesore.

Sounds like someone is annoyed with their neighbor for planting trees at the curb...

Generally developers plant the trees on the verge when a house is built, so I would guess that individual homeowners could plant ones later, too.

If a specific tree causes a problem, that's another story.

It's funny how the Town will plant trees on that strip of property but yet once the tree becomes too big and starts lifting the sidewalk, the damage is now the homeowners responsibility to fix. It happened to my aunt. The Town was doing their beatification project throughout East Meadow and I requested 2 trees to be planted. They do add a nice look to the property I must say. As far as homeowners planting their own, I'm not sure of the facts but I do know that people around my area have done things to that strip themselves, i.e. planting around the trees, planting shrubs on that strip, etc.

yes, its a crappy rule. in 85, hurrican gloria slightly uprooted a tree on my parents property between the sidewalk and steet. finally when it got to the point that it had to be taken down, the town said they had to hire an outside company to take it down which would take over a year to get to us. well, believe it or now, a few months later, a neighbor of mine tripped on the sidewalk and tried sueing my father. I called the town and told them they "they" had a problem. they turned around and said it was my responsibility and not theres. I told them they were wrong because we called the town to address the problem and they said we had to wait. the next day, the section was blocked off and the day after, the tree was taken down and the sidewalk repaired.

and the guy who tripped only won a $5000 settlement from my fathers homeowners insurance.
