now here lies the question. Am I my neices daughter's "grand uncle"? I would think so but she argues with me that I am a "great uncle". what is the proper term?

Either is correct. My family uses great uncle.

I think either is fine. We use "great" also (like great grandparents). Congrats!

You would be this child's great-uncle; and, if you have children, your children would be this child's first cousins, once removed; and, if you had children and they had children, your grand-children would be this child's second cousins.

See, it's all semantics. You need to take it out of the context of age and put it, instead, into the context of how good of an uncle you really are. "Am I a good uncle? Nah, I'm a GREAT uncle!"
