I also noticed that there aren't as many fire flies - but from another thread, I see that they are in abundance elsewhere on the island; I guess they moved away (?).
Long Island = August crickets.

Used to drive me nuts when I lived there and they got inside.

I haven't heard any in my area of N.E. and am worried that some sort of change in our environment has "killed" them off. I find their sound peaceful and calming and in no way annoying. We've had more rain this year compared to past years and thought that might be a factor.
Thanks

One got in my bedroom one time. Took me two days to find him and get him out. Didn't sleep too well at that time.

I'm in CT and have been wondering why I don't hear any crickets at night this summer?!!! It is sad and disturbing to think that we have destroyed them by all the pesticides people use on lawns etc...Does anyone know what's happened??

I noticed this too.. The last couple summers, especially this summer. They should be chirping in full swing right now, but I haven't heard anything. I think pesticides are the main culprit. Crickets seem like the only thing they have going for them is they're ugly as HELL and can hop around pretty fast; but they're clumsy and easy prey. Anyone else notice a lot more grasshoppers this year? Love to see that, as long as they stay outside! Maybe the grasshoppers are eating all the crickets.

If you want my mom has plenty of camel crickets in her basement. LOL, she is using arrow exterminating and the problem seems to be going away. Apparently camel crickets are very popular in peoples homes. She knows 2 other people with the same problem.

I had them when I first moved into my basement. They like dark damp places. Once we finished it and kept the conditions steady with a dehumidifier I haven't seen them. They are NASTY looking suckers for sure.
