I would say its too early. Rentals now are mostly likely looking for Aug 1st start dates.
That being said, I would personally start looking in august. This will also be too early as these rentals will be looking for sept 1st move in dates. However, you will get an idea of what is and is not out there and if you find something absolutely perfect you might want to jump on it. Either ask the landlord if he/she is amenable to an oct 1 start date (which they might be if the place has been vacant a long time) or bite the bullet and pay the extra month up front. I have done this before myself. I rationalized it to myself four ways, 1 - it was the best thing i had seen by far while looking over the prior 2 weeks, 2 - it was much cheaper than my current rent and other rentals I had seen so within the year i would break even on the extra month payout, 3 - I did not pay a realtor fee and consider this extra month similar to that, 4 - it allowed me a very easy move as I slowly moved things in randomly over the month and at the end had very little to do.
