Sometimes I think that this is the only place left on LI where a guy can afford to not send his wife out to work and yet still own a home. Also, there are lots of big families. Many have four kids. I don't think you see that in Dix Hills or Commack or Smithtown. In those places where both parents are working to pay off their huge mortgages they must be too tired to %$#@ and make babies.
Economics is a trade off: Bigger Family or more expensive home.
Some women WANT to work. Some families do NOT want lots of children. And when did this become a post about North Babylon?
Nothing wrong with women working and not having kids or few kids. Everyone can choose what they want. All I'm saying is that an affordable neighborhood like North Babylon makes it possible for people to raise traditional large families if they want. I would also say that most of the people here are either Irish or Italian and Catholic - tendency towards larger families I guess.
A very nice starter ranch in prime condition can be had for under $400,000 in North Babylon where a similar home in say Commack, Smithtown or Dix Hills is over $500,000. Most of the young families buy fixer uppers for as low as $300,000 and turn them into beautiful homes. There has been lots of turnover as the older WWII generation dies off and young people move in.
KMO4: What is wrong about discussing North Babylon on the thread?
I think there is nothing wrong with women working, I would never say it is a bad thing to do, but how come if you have a large family people are the first to make the most obnoxious comments?
I don't know. I just think it is better for mom to stay at home while the kids are growing-up. Some women like the role and others don't. To each his/her own.
KMO4: What is wrong about discussing North Babylon on the thread?
I don't know- The forum rules say we have to stick to the original thread topic, which was about school districts, but we turned it into a discussion about NB. I was afraid we would get in trouble...
Last. Like I posted earlier. The kid that graduates valedictorian with high SAT's from Brentwood is definitely going to go to Harvard or Yale with a full scholarship while the kid from Syosset who graduates lower in his/her class is not as likely to get into Harvard or Yale.
Again. All that matters is if your kid is getting an education.
Don't ever confuse going to school with education. The two are often mutually exclusive.
OMG, I actually agree w/you. I'm suprised by your sensibility on this topic, I like it
Instead of complaining about what people are writing about on this thread introduce something of interest.
Besides the whole conversation about North Babylon is in reference to the original thread topic anyway. It was introduced to prove a point that a kid doesn't have to go to a pedigree school district to get a good education.

I don't think people necessarily pick a "better" school district with the idea that their children will have a shot of getting into an Ivy League school. I think they pick a "good" school in hopes they receive a better education, as well as have the opportunity to participate in more activites.
How is the education better in a so called "good" district?
All the districts teach to the same state mandated curriculums. The schools don't make a lick of difference. I mean, look at that kid in Connetquot. Or do you remember those crazy kids from Northport in the 1980s who gauged out their friend's eyes. What about the Jocks from Bellmore-Merrick that sodomized one of their team mates.
The school is only as good as the student wants it to be. A kid can go to Syosset for 12 years and still be less educated than a kid that goes to Deer Park.
How are there more opportunities to participate in more activities?
There are probably more opportunities to participate in a less competative district as I have already explained. All the districts, with a handful of exceptions, pretty much offer all the same stuff. What about those home schooled kids that do extremely well on standardized tests. You are missing the point. Education and going to a "good" school are often mutually exclusive.
What kids really learn in the so called better schools is to emulate their materialistic parents, form cliques and ostracize those that do not fit in.
Here is a dirty little secret - in many of those so called "good" schools standards are actually lower. Why? Teachers are afraid to fail any kids - so they pass everyone. The teachers want to keep their jobs and the parents and school administration off their backs.

You think that doesn't happen at all schools?
Materialism is prevalent in our society. Don't kid yourself...it's everywhere, not just "good" schools on Long Island.
