What are these Census Designated places?
I was wondering what the story was with certain "CDP's" on maps that arent considered towns, villages or hamlets. Places like "Maywood" at the intersection of Route 110 and Route 109 in East Farmingdale as an example. "Promised Land" on the eastern reaches of the south fork is another one that comes to mind.
If you look at a map, you will see many of these places that aren't included in any census surveys, and are not hamlets. Tiana and West Tiana, Freetown, and many other exist on the south shore far out east. These places exist on google maps, mapquests and GPS systems, but that's about all there is to their enigmatic existances.
Were they names of old communities that don't exist anymore? Arbitrary names given to areas? A combo of these and other factors? Anyone who has any information they can share would be appreciated!

I don't think any of those qualify as a CDP, meaning they aren't recognized by the census bureau. I think they are basically names for neighborhoods within a community (or names within village, hamlet if you want to get technical) but with no official recognition, such as Nassau Shores or Biltmore Shores in Massapequa.

Maywood, Promised Land, Tiana, West Tiana, Freetown and others may exist on Google maps, Mapquests and GPS systems, but they are not CDPs. They may be historic areas or neighborhoods within a city, village or hamlet.
CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for an unincorporated community in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Unincorporated communities, or hamlets, are determined respectively by the Nassau County Planning Commission and the Suffolk County Plannning Department.

Thanks for the info, Walter, you have a font of knowledge about these things,(although anyone who knows feel free to answer) do you know what Maywood actually is? Same for Promised Land and Freetown? Also, I've never heard people refer to living in a place like maywood, but i've heard people say they are from tiana and west tiana, even though they arent considered hamlets or cdp's. Just wondering on some background info

I'm sort of guessing that Tiana and West Tiana are areas or neighborhoods in the Hamlet of Hampton Bays in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County.
Also there is the Hamlet of Baywood in the western part of the Town of Islip, to the immediate east of the Hamlet of Deer Park in the Town of Babylon.

If I remember my Hamptons' history correctly, Promised Land was where an old wharf and fish processing plant used to be located back in the 1920s. Since it was a main source of income for the locals and there were plenty of fish in those days, they called the plant "Promised Land".
Please feel free to correct any of this as I am recalling this information from a Dan's Paper article I read years ago when I lived in East Hampton.

It appears the Freetown is now all or part of the Hamlet of East Hampton North in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County, because, according to Wikipedia, "After slavery was abolished in New York State in 1827, freed slaves were relocated to small houses just north of East Hampton (village), New York."

Thanks for all the info, guys. At my old doctor's office in Massapequa he had a room with lots of old LIRR maps, going all the way back to the 1800's. Back in the 1920's Promised Land was a stop on the LIRR, before Montauk. I was fascinated to see that.
