Whats with all the houses for sale in Old Field?
I was in Old Field today and it looks like theres an enormous(like every 5th house was FSBO) amount of homes for sale?
I seriously doubt its economic ...is there something environmentally/politically askew going on?
Just wondering if some locals could weigh in?
Weird.

For those who may not be familiar with Old Field
The Village of Old Field is part of the "Three Village" area (it's really 2 villages and 2 hamlets) that includes the Village of Poquott, the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket and the Hamlet of Stony Brook, and can be a geographically challenging community because Old Field is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with Old Field:
The Village of Old Field (incorporated in 1927) is in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Old Field in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by Conscience Bay; on the south by the Hamlet of Stony Brook; and, on the west by Smithtown Bay.
Old Field is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address: places in the Village of Old Field have a "Stony Brook, NY 11790" and "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I'd guess a few folks got in over their heads and didn't anticipate what things would be like nowadays

My dentist lives in old field. Every other house (Including his) has been for sale the last 5 years or so.

I am up there quite often. Most of the homes for sale are not FSBO; there is a village law forbidding Realtor advertising signs. The signs have phone numbers only.
That written:
A few of the homes for sale up there are flips; I nearly bought the one just north of Old Field Woods Rd on the west side of Old Field Road prior to the flipper who is currently trying to sell it.
As someone else posted, there is a house or two whose owners bought beyond their means -- Old Field isn't as old money as it used to be. A few of my old time Old Field acquaintances bemoan the changes which have been brought about by new money.
One of my friends is relocating (husband's job moved) and is trying to sell her house. A few homes for sale over there are the same thing.

Could it be a reflex reaction to the rumor that there will soon be a Young Israel of Old Field shul?

Its not just Old Field. I was on the Island last weekend for the first time in years! We stayed in Old Stony Brook. Took a drive through Head of the Harbor and noticed the same thing. An above average amount of houses for sale. If I could afford one I would be buying one!
