East Northport
I just started looking at some houses in East Northport and wanted to get some feedback about the area. How are the schools? Are there any areas that are nicer or more desirable than others? My budget is up to $700K and I'm finding some nice houses with decent property but I don't know much about the reputation of East Northport. I'd appreciate any thoughts and feedback....good or bad! Thanks!!

For those who may not be familiar with East Northport
For those who may not be familiar with East Northport:
East Northport is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County, along the Huntington/Smithtown town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Northport in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Village of Northport and the Hamlet of Fort Salonga; on the east by the Hamlet of Fort Salonga and the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown (the Huntington/Smithtown town line); on the south by the Hamlet of Commack, the Hamlet of Elwood and the Hamlet of Greenlawn; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Greenlawn and the Hamlet of Centerport.
The Hamlet of East Northport has a different border than does the "East Northport, NY 11731" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Northport, NY 11731" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of East Northport and a place can have other than an "East Northport, NY 11731" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of East Northport): places that have an "East Northport, NY 11731" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of East Northport are in the Hamlet of Greenlawn, the Hamlet of Elwood and the Hamlet of Commack; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of East Northport with a "Northport, NY 11768" and "Commack, NY 11725" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

The East Northport/Northport School District is great as well as Commack. Commack gives you easier access to the parkways in my opinion.

Among home buyers, East Northport is an area often overlooked.
Schools are generally well regarded and taxes often lower than comparable homes in other areas. With your budget, you'd get a really nice house!
Don't know anyone who has anything bad to say about E. Northport...

At 700K you are near the high end of East Northport. You would be able to get a terrific home. East Northport has homes that range from about 400K to about 1MM (though not that many). You could also look at Northport and Fort Salonga.

I live in East Northport within the Northport-East Northport School District. I have kids at NPT High School, NPT Middle School, and Dickenson Ave School. People are friendly, plenty of kids, the libraries are great, the proximity to the sound and beaches is awesome, shopping is convenient at Huntington/Commack, quaint stores in Huntington Village/Northport Village are also easily accessible... there's not a whole lot I can actually say against this area, that isn't also true everywhere else on Long Island (high cost of living, long commute into the city, for example).
Keep in mind that East Northport, NY 11731 is covered by three school districts, but all of them are rated well. Northport-East Northport, Commack, and Elwood.

That's a high budget for E.N. My only knock against it would be that there is no real "downtown" to it - it's pretty much Jericho Tpke. But you are close to Northport which is a great town and Huntington and Smithtown aren't too much further.

Actually, "downtown" East Northport is Larkfield Road from Bellrose Ave to about 5th Avenue.

What Tom said.
In any event, I'm not sure what the whole appeal is with Northport's Main Street. Sure, it's quaint, it's next to the harbor, and there are a few good restaurants, and now it has a performing arts theater, but it's not like you're going to do your shopping there every weekend. I lived within walking distance of it for 4 years and the only way I would have made more use of it was if I had a boat to dock at the harbor.
Huntington's downtown area has more to offer, to be sure.
