That kind of logic would make Garden City bad because it's next to two questionable areas - Hempstead and Uniondale. People really need to get beyond the idea that any place that isn't 85% or better white is automatically a ghetto.

With demographic trends being what they are there soon won't be a choice but to live an area that is relatively diverse or near one that is. Like it or not this is reality, the sooner people stop trying to run away, the sooner things will stabilize. Look at the demographics of exurban school districts in Orange and Putnam and Dutchess Counties, even these far flung areas are becoming more diverse at an even faster rate than many places on Long Island. There is literally nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

People on this board need to get over the neighborhood paranoia. I admit I kind of got sucked into it when I first moved here, but over time I've accepted the fact that an area can be diverse and be safe, have good schools and be a good place to live. People have to work on making this a reality.
Port North: can you tell me a little about Beacon Hill area of Port? We are looking there and wonder how it stacks up vs. Salem, Baxter and Manhasset Bay Estates.....

All are great neighborhoods. I think taxes are a tad higher in Baxter Estates because it's an incorporated village. Salem would be the cheapest of the four.

One small issue is that South Salem Elementary (In the Salem neighborhood) is right near an old Superfund site which leaked landfill gas many years ago. The problem has been contained but I still would be a little nervous about living in that vicinity or sending my kids to South Salem. Luckily, most of Beacon Hill is zoned for Daly Elementary not South Salem.

PORT WASHINGTON LANDFILL

Baxter Estates, Manhasset Bay Estates and Beacon Hill are all very similar in price and are great areasto live. They are all filled with well built homes mainly built in the 1920's and 30's.

Baxter Estates is very hilly and secluded but right near the center of town including the Library and Harbor.

Manhasset Bay Estates is in the South West corner of Port and part of it I believe is in the Manhasset School District (which is even better than the Port Washington School District). It is very similar in ambience to nearby Plandome. Manhasset Bay Estates Association

Beacon Hill has a very English feel to it with lots of Tudors and beautiful landscaping. It is also fairly close to the center of town and you you can walk to the train station from the western parts of this neighborhood. It is pretty quiet but avoid buying on Longview Road and Beacon Hill Road as people use these as cut through streets.

Hope this helps you.

As a self-governing village in the Town of North Hempstead, Baxter Estates is not part of the Hamlet of Port Washington which is governed at-large by the Town of North Hempstead.

It is not necessary to refer to a village as an "incorporated village" because all villages are municipal corporations and "incorporated village" would mean an incorporated-corporation, and implies that there are such entities as an "unincorporated village", which is an oxymoron (unincorporated-corporation) and does not exist in New York State.

While I do not know for a certainty, many villages in the Town of North Hempstead actually pay lower property taxes than do similar properties in an adjoining hamlet because the village can protect the homeowner from several Town of North Hempstead property taxes that property in villages do not have to pay.

You, not know for certain?

They have prompted me to "hate" brooklyn and move upstate or Long Island where I hope not to have my children around that type of mean undesirable attitude.

I would try and stick it out for a bit longer....chances are they will not stay that long......folks like that tend to be nomadic (they move), not settle down and put roots into a community like your family has.

where are these towns!? must I be a millionaire to have these things for my children?! sheesh, sorry I'm venting a bit of stress not directed at anyone in particular
Just about every town I can think of in Nassau with the possible exception of Hempstead and Roosevelt can fit your need of quiet town with good clean safe schools. LI isn't exactly Compton you know.

You claim in other posts that you want an integrated area but you're looking at wealthy, highly exclusive segregated areas.

And no, you don't need to be a millionaire to get those things for your children. Mod cut: personal attack

That may be because the integrated areas do not offer an excellent school district which is my top priority according to greatschools.net. I don't know much of LI which is why I am asking for information on the matter since no school with this criteria was recommended to me.

Do you know of any integrated areas in LI that offer an excellent school district? That would be wonderful and I would welcome the help.

Mod cut: not necessary.
