no one is going to be in the office until next monday and i'm the only one here. my mortgage bank just called to verify employment, so i verified it myself and said i was the person who does payroll, which i am, but i gave them our bookkeeper's name.
are they going to follow up? what have i done??? i want to get a house and they already called and no one has gotten back to them.

You could have just verified employment and been done with it. Why are you so honest?

I have to warn you. The mortgage police are probably going to come and drag you away. This is a little known secret SWAT unit that is funded by the banks to ensure that this type of miscreant behavior does not go unpunished. Their interogation room is in an undisclosed vault of a failed banking institution, chosen because it is soundproof so that no one can hear their "interogations" which can get very loud at times. I'm glad that I'm not in your shoes.

I'd tell the bookkeeper that you verified the information as her (please tell me you gave the the same info the bookkeeper would have!) so that in case they call back to re-verify or for additional information, she'll know that they already 'spoke' to her once.

I would have just said "you're speaking to him/her".
If they don't believe you, say ok, ask me some questions that only I would know from the application or form or whatever you call it.

That's a tricky situation. I could see that happenening to me, as there are only 4 people at my job, and we all dont' work at the same time, except on delivery day! Often on Fridays I'm alone for a couple hours. I understand you prob. panicked, and thought it might be your only chance to get a house. I prob. would have done the same thing! I panic too easily! LOL...
I honestly wouldn't have seen anything wrong w/ telling the mortgage co that you are the only one there, and you yourself do payroll. Besides, isn't that somewhere on all of your paperwork for the mortgage? Could you have given your boss' cellphone? Or at least told your boss and had them call the mortgage co?
I would just leave it alone for now, but tell the bookkeeper any and all information that you told the guy on the phone. Write it down for them if you have to. No sense in opening up a BIGGER can of worms than is already open.
Just remember this for next time: When you tell the truth there's nothing to remember.

Why can't a recent pay stub serve as ample evidence?
