It is true the family was murdered by the oldest sibling, this happened 30 something years ago. The house is not haunted. The first person to buy the house afterwards sold movie and book rights , made a large sum of money and moved out. To me it is very sad that people are making money on an innocent family’s tragedy . Besides the parents, there were young children who fell victim to their brother as well. I feel it was long ago and this family should be able to rest in peace. It is horrible around here at times, people come from all over. They take pictures and video’s and has gone as far to rip some of the shingles off the house for “memorabilia”
The house is absolutely beautiful and is on the water, it has been totally re-done.. I am not sure if people are aware, but they used a house in NJ for the filming. There is a couple that lives there for over 25 years already.. they are kind of ‘weekenders” as they own an apartment on the upper east side in Manhattan.. They told me they never experienced any paranormal activities what so ever. Honestly, I could never live in that house .. not because I believe it is haunted, just the thought of what took place there long ago..
I pray the Defao family can some day rest in peace

How sad. I also could never live in that house with such a tragedy. Disgusting that people want to video it, etc and rip shingles off. Thank you for the info.

right, you didn't actually come out and use the word hate..it's how you wrote and your words , to me you might as well have. Read back how when OP's wrote and said they thought it was a nice town, pretty homes etc. .. your come back was still negitive and putting it down. No one forced your fingers to the key board... but you went on still putting it down. We are here to share, not bash the

out of places that people live. My feelings are you have never been down here at all.. and to write in the manner that you did was not acceptable at all.
When I first worote about Amityville is was to enlighten people like you who sterotyped . This is where we invested and bringing up our children and I get tired of this entire area being trashed from people who label it like it as it is some type of slum area... this is so far from the truth and yes, it does bother me.. These are all the reasons I wrote to you as I did. I actually felt I stooped to a level that I am not in...but it was the moment. We can go on nicely and put this behind us. I am sure some where on here you were a nice guy.. don't get me wrong... I am still pretty ticked but not worth going any further , just let the negitive comments stop please and go on nicely from here

b/c i wanted to tell OP the truth...MOST of Amityville is nice, not ALL...and I didn't want to mislead her so I had to include the trailer parks as well. You can't talk about Amityville and not mention the trailer parks...it's part of amityville as well...and I am sure if you lived in one of those trailer parks you wouldn't want to be left out either.
Secondly, why get so upset? People bash my town all the time. It wasn't like I bashed you, I bashed a section of Amityville not the whole town. The town I grew up in is actually alot worse than Amityville, which is why I left.
Thirdly, I'm not a guy.

If the trailer parks are in North Amityville, a hamlet, then they are not part of Amityville, a village.
The Hamlet of North Amityville and the Village of Amityville are two separate and independent communities in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County.

but she wasn't talking about the village of amityville...she was talking about the whole hamlet of amityville...which includes north amityville as well as the village and south amityville.
Walter, I gotta admit, you really have a lot of time on your hands.

There is no Hamlet of Amityville.
There is the Village of Amityville.
There is the Hamlet of North Amityville.
There is the Hamlet of Copiague, part of which has an "Amityville, NY 11701" mailing address.
Villages (municipal corporations) and hamlets (unincorporated areas) are separate entities and a village cannot be part of a hamlet and a hamlet cannot be part of a village.
NYS Geographic Glossary may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
