Hello, I'm going to Montauk in a few weeks for the week end. I grew up on LI but don't know about this one. Does Montauk have a problem with horse flies on the beach?

Every South shore beach has those big biting flies (I really don't know if they are actually horse flies).
Deep Woods Off is the cure. Applied heavily, they will land on you and take off before biting.

No I mean a lot of them. I was at smiths point 2 weeks ago and there were none! But recently someone told me about this so I am checking.
Those would be Greenheads. They are generally in bays and marches, and not on ocean facing beaches.
The area of Montauk that could be bad would be Napeague around Lazy Point.

They are definitely on LI beaches, but they are NOTHING compared to the Jersey shore, especially Barnegat and Long Beach Island. If the wind is blowing the wrong way down there, forget it, your day will be ruined.
There aren't as extensive a system of marshes on LI, so there are only a few, but one bite makes you realize what a menace they are. I went to Robert Moses this weekend and got at least one bite from a green head. I'm not sure if there are any marshes at all that far out east.
They are on all south facing ocean beaches when the wind blows from the North.
Yes, that is true, which is why I only go to the beach when the wind is from the south. Fortunately 90% of the time the wind is onshore, so I never experienced Greenheads as a South shore beach.
I have experienced mosquitoes though, Watch Hill and Smith Point are BAD when it comes to mosquitoes. These are larger salt marsh mosquitoes, and they gang up on you in swarms.

NJ is worse because their beaches dont face south, so the onshore sea breeze is weaker or non-existant more of the time. It is also hotter.
In addition, public transportation to beaches down there is practically non-existant. They dont have any buses to Sandy Hook (unless you want to walk from Highlands or take a $22 one way ferry from NYC) and only one bus a day that stops near Island Beach State Park.
Places like Fire Island and Jones Beach have no equal down there. At least FI can be reached by fairly frequent ferries, and Robert moses and Jones Beach have buses.
NJ may have bigger pine barrens but we have better beaches.

We stayed right off the ocean - no flies or mosquitos at all.
Enjoy
