Default Things to do in Western Suffolk/Eastern Nassau Area with Kids?

I recently moved to East Northport so I am not too familiar with the area as I am not from Long Island. Anyways, my sister with her husband and kids are coming for a visit so I need to entertain for a 3 day weekend. Her kids are 5 and 3....mine are 3 and newborn(this is why we haven't gone out much to explore yet

I am looking for family stuff to do with little kids. Thought the beach one day might be nice but which one? I have been to crabmeadow which is the closest one to our house and is nice but how about sunkenmeadow is it better? Is fire island worth the trip with little kids? Any other suggestions? Good places to eat in the area considering the kid situation? Museums?

Thanks for any help

Default Things to do on Lawn Guyland

Nick1918, here are two sites that offer weekly eMail newsletters: LongIsland.com and About Long Island NY, and, here's what could be the best site: Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission.

There is a whole area here in central Nassau with the Children's Museum, Firefighter's Museum, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nunley's Carousel. About 35 minute ride for you.

If you live in the Town of HUntington (and I think E.N. falls into that) then you can get a beach sticker and visit any of the town beaches, which are great with kids because the water is gentle (no waves) they can sit at the water's edge and play. The beaches are small too. Fleets Cove in Huntington has a little playground too. I would avoid Sunken Meadow - it's pretty big and the beach/playground/picnic areas are spread out - the town beaches are better with little ones.

The aquarium is fun too, but a bit pricey.

You are correct, twingles, East Northport is a hamlet in the Town of Huntington.

Nick1918, as a newcomer, http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

There is a public pool in the Town of HUntington, used to go there a couple of times a summer when I was a kid. It's in Dix Hills, has pools, playground, concessions and picnic area.

Here are some ideas for strolling/quiet time with kids: Oyster Bay - Teddy Roosevelt's Home (Sagamore Hill National Historic Site - Theodore Roosevelt's Home (U.S. National Park Service)) with children helping to fold the flag on Sundays; John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden (http://www.locustvalley.com/japanese...0garden.html); Old Westbury - Old Westbury Gardens (http://www.oldwestburygardens.org/)'Here are some ideas for active time with kids:Cold Spring Harbor: Fish Hatchery and Aquarium (Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery) where children can feed the fish and also catch fish as they provide all the gear (certain hours only). There is a nice picnic space there as well.Huntington: Heckscher Park has a pond, fountains, lots of trees, two playgrounds for all ages, shaded sand boxes, restrooms and is a short walk from the center of the town on Main Street. Try Adventureland amusement park on Route 110 in Farmingdale. It's got all kinds of rides - small ones for the kids too.
