It's not really that different from 15 years ago, we just have 24/7 news and internet now to drum up fear in parents.

6 and 7 is a little too young to be left alone at the pool. However, if the kids were 12 or 13, I think it would be ok to leave them there for an hour or two. The fact that many people don't want to give their children any responsibility at all is frightening to me. How are they ever expected to become independent adults? Responsibility has to given incrementally. Otherwise when these kids go to college they won't be able to function without Mommy or Daddy or they may do stupid things like binge drink because they go from total control by their parents to total freedom.

This overprotective attitude is more common on Long Island than other places. I grew up upstate and had way more freedom back in the 80's/early 90's than kids do here today. Crime/child molesters were just as bad back then, it 's just the 24 hour media today that blows everything out of proportion.

Yesterday I was in Lancaster County, PA and saw a 10 year old Amish kids running errands for their parents. Should their parents be arrested for neglect? Don't give me the excuse that crime doesn't happen there, that's B.S.

God, I've got to get out of this insane place called LI! The materialism, the paranoia and the smothering parental attitude, just disgusting!

I encountered a 28 year old woman that refused to walk through a casino back to her room by herself at a party I attended, because she was "afraid to walk back alone". Through an upscale hotel. That is what these overprotected children will grow up to be.

God forbid any of these children ever end up in a situation where they have to have a bit of street smarts and think fast.

My "street smarts" have saved my life on several occasions.

Seriously, everytime I go away for a few days, I dread coming back here. This place is way way overrated. I forgot, I'm supposed bow down and worship my lucky stars that I live in the "Center of the Universe" Pleasssse!

The traffic, aggressive drivers, the "I'm better than you" luxury cars, annoying accents, paranoia, underlying racism, materialistic attitudes, living your life for your "career", you can have it! I'm out of here as soon as the economy improves! 10 years has been way too long!

I'm a Northerner, North Carolina wouldn't exactly be a good fit either. I'd move back Upstate if there were jobs, but unfortunately the tax structure in this state make Upstate unable to compete with other areas of the country.

SE Pennsylvania (my top choice), Northern New England or possibly Maryland/Virginia are my likely destinations.

yes, LI has changed as everything does with time, but not everyone who lives here fits your description ..this is stereo typing for sure and as a member on this forum you bring great insult to people who do not deserve it... You seem to carry a lot of hostilely against LI’ers…so why are you even on here ? Many wonderful people on here, and there is no need to write as you do.

Just expressing my opinion, no personal offense intended.

Is it now against the law to express an opinion? People need thicker skin.
