Why are there so many homes for sale in North Merrick?
North Merrick is in close proximity to Freeport, Uniondale, and Roosevelt. Are the demographics changing there? Why are so many homes for sale? Just curious.
With all due respect to both poster, these kinds of sentiments are particualrly why White Flight has been such a problem in this nation for the past 60 years. For some specious reason, midle class whites write off the neighborhood as a ghetto-in-waiting, property values drop and the poor and lower middle class mostly move in.
The economy stinks. North Merrick is decidely "middle middle class." It is still Whitelandia (perhaps too much so). Many residents are bound to have financial reason to sell in a panic. But to read anything into it based on no evidence only helps create the problem you claimed you were trying to avoid.
In the spirit of debate, I hope the first 2 posters apreciated my input--which isn't really new or insightful anyway.
I live in N.Merrick and yes the property taxes are pretty high.
I have a house 50 x 100 and the taxes are around $13,000. The taxes are killing us, but we have a kid in H.S. and the schools are great. We will consider selling probably when he's off to college as we won't need a big house nor do we wish to pay these taxes.
As far as the neighborhood goes, it's the same as when I moved here 10 years ago.
So my guess with a lot of the homes being for sale could be due to the economy, loss of job/income. These days it takes the husband and wife working full time in order to survive out here and with the unemployment being what it is, there's your answer.
HappySpring, well the next question I have is who is buying up these homes? How "Diverse" is North Merrick becoming? Just looking for honest answers. Thanks.

spidaman -- As of now these homes are sitting on the market. The one's who are really buying are the 1st time home buyers who can afford a home usually under the $400k price range. The homes in N.Merrick I would say cost more than that. But you can find some at that price that would most likely need a lot of work.
In my opinion, I think the area is still white.

How did you come to the conclusion that the number of homes on the market in N. Merrick are higher than they should be?
Based on limlsrealtor.com, there are 31 homes for sale in N. Merrick. Compare that to surrounding areas:
Merrick - 84
S. Merrick - 73
Bellmore - 43
N. Bellmore - 60

Doesn't seem out of balance IMO.
BTW, I started a similar thread a while back. Good feedback from other members:
