Old Chester Hills in Huntington
We're currently looking at houses in the Elwood school district and an area called "Old Chester Hills" keeps popping up. It is always described as "desirable" in the real estate listing. Can someone tell me more about it? Would it be a good place to buy a small ranch with hopes of expaning in the future?
Thanks for your help.

For those who may not be familiar with Elwood
nyc-li, without a specific street address, I'm guessing that "Old Chester Hills" is a neighborhood in Elwood ("Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address).
It is important to understand that Elwood is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address, and places in the Hamlet of Elwood have a "Huntington, NY 11743", "Greenlawn, NY 11740" "East Northport, NY 11731", "Commack, NY 11725" and "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with Elwood:
Elwood is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Elwood in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Greenlawn and the Hamlet of East Northport; on the east by the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Commack; on the south by the Hamlet of Dix Hills; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Greenlawn.
Elwood is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Elwood have a "Huntington, NY 11743", "Greenlawn, NY 11740" "East Northport, NY 11731", "Commack, NY 11725" and "Dix Hills, NY 11746" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

If the price is right, in my personal and professional opinion, it would be a good area to expand an existing smaller house. Properties are usually more than large enough and it is a very nice, private neighborhood that is generally considered "desirable"

We looked at some houses there many years ago, it's a lovely area home-wise, I just didn't like the whole surrounding area in general. I like having a place that has more of a village-type atmosphere to it, that's just me.

There are 96 villages (64 in the 3 towns in Nassau County and 32 in the 10 towns in Suffolk County) and some of these villages are more urban and some of these villages are more rural, and there are 195 hamlets (70 in the 3 towns in Nassau County and 125 in the 10 towns in Suffolk County) and some of these hamlets are more urban than many of the villages.

Looks like the homes in this development are listed from 595000 to over 1M. A small ranch in this area is 595000. Is this your price range? If not, a ranch in the surrounding areas might be better suited for you, maybe one with a Greenlawn mailing address? There are other options for Elwood school district.

Personally I'd rather be north of that area, somewhere into Greenlawn.
