Me too...I'm in Long Beach...in a ground floor apartment. I pray pray pray nothing comes out of this.

Gloria was the last hurricane that came directly right over Long Island (eye passing over us). Other storms either were remnants or passed away from us and all we got was beach erosion or the east end (Bob I think) had some trees and poles knocked down.
Gloria did plenty of damage arriving here as a category 2, was out of power for 5 or 6 days.

The streets south of Merrick Road were all flooded out in Amityville. With Bell, the eye passed right over Western Suffolk. You could see stars and it was so calm..until the next side of the storm arrived. Anyone else remember Agnes or Bell?

I don't. But I do remember going out when the eye of Gloria passed over us. I couldn't believe how calm it was with more stormy weather to come.
In looking at the maps of both Bell and Gloria, Gloria's center of the eye passed just a bit west of where the center of Bell's eye passed.

That's what the New Orleanians said.

but it's more unrealistic here than there b/c our waters are colder...of course we're not immune, but the probability here is less than it is in NOLA and southern places.

there's a reason insurance companies stopped insuring homes around here. It might not happen this year. It might not happen in 10 years. But it's going to happen...

How could someone not have insurance on their home?

Correct, especially considering how cold this summer was, I'm not sure that a category 4 is even possible this year with how cool the water temperatures are.
It doesn't mean a huge deadly storm coming from the Caribbean couldn't still be a cat 3 by the time it gets here, but there's a reason why we very rarely get hit with storms at their worst.

When did Gloria hit LI? I must have been living off the island then. So I was not around for that one. My Uncle in Oakdale said it was a big mess.
How about Floyd in 1999? If it came ashore on LI, it would have done alot of damage. Luckily, it turned away at the last minute. I was in Manhattan attending a business meeting and at 12 noon, they announced that the city was shutting down. I tried to catch Amtrak back to Maryland, where I was living at the time, but the tracks were flooded out in Jersey. Metro North was shut down too, so there was no chance of getting to my brother's house in Dutchess County. So I caught the LIRR to Oakdale and stayed at my Uncle's house. Turns out my train was the last to leave Manhattan as the LIRR shut down right after we left Penn. I was lucky, otherwise I would have been stranded in Penn Station. All of the hotels in Manhattan were already full by then.

Gloria, I think, was one of the reasons my family moved from the South Shore to the North Shore way back..
