Probably not, but Hurricane Bill this month was still at bare category 1 strength when it brushed Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, so who knows? In fact, many meterologists said that if it weren't for a unusually strong cold front line of thunderstorms that pushed it east, it may well have landfalled in the northeast US as a category 2 a la Gloria.
None of the models right now are predicting anything about category 1 though if it does landfall in the northeast. But that is still rare (though not "never" rare) enough that it would make news.

That has been one of Long Island's major strengths, the way the jet stream flows. If it weren't for the west to east movement of fronts pushing most of these storms further east of here, we'd have a lot more storms coming over us.

Also remember that Gloria hit LI during low tide producing a 7 - 8 foot storm surge . If it was high tide the flooding would have been much worse .

Bill was pretty big in terms of that...Jones Beach was entirely flooded up until the concession stand. Would say his winds might have been lower though than Gloria. Bill didn't really seem all that bad to me...was Gloria a lot worse in terms of her strength? granted she did a lot more damaged than Bill did. But Bill perhaps caused more flooding? Waves were around 12-15 ft. high last weekend!

No, Gloria had more flooding than Bill. Had Bill come right over us, then probably Bill would have done more flooding as I don't think we would have been at low tide at that point.

Easy.. major companies stop writing policies all together and homeowners are forced to buy more expensive insurance from the state or have none at all.
at least that's what happened here.

FYI the weblink in the first post is down, here's another:
Tropical Storm Danny projected path
Seems like it could be a pretty decent storm. Not sure if it'll be anything of past hurricanes, but a big one none the less. Yeah we had a very hard time getting insurance on our home due to "the hurricane that's due". All the major companies said no. We eventually got a good quote so, that worked out but it's kinda crazy.
Anyway, we'll see waht happens in the next few days.

I looked at the diagram...it looks like winds are stronger by us and closer to land than it is by florida and the like. What does the red mean? It's greenish by us.

It seems like it might be concentration of the storm? I dunno...it looks like it starts to fan out as it goes green,.
