What Gives Hicksville A Bad Rap?
I lived in Hicksville for two years. (Lee Ave area).
Most of the comments I've seen about Hicksville are negative.
Sure, the Broadway Mall area can seem a little sketchy but the neighborhoods themselves are better than a lot of places on Long Island.
It seems that Hicksville gets a much worse rap on this forum than many other similar places (Levittown, Bethpage, Massapequa).. I'm just curious as to why that is.
The only difference I can think of is that Hicksville is more diverse and that's actually more of a positive than a negative.
Are the schools that much worse than 'similar areas'?

Scanning through the Hicksville-related threads I noticed a dislike of the increasing Indian/Middle Eastern residents as well as supposedly illegal immigrants of hispanic origin. That and increased traffic.

Pretty much the dislike for Hicksville comes from the fact that their is a large population of people with a darker skin complexion than in areas like Massapequa, Levittown, and Bethpage. People are pretty narrow minded when it comes to race.

That's good to hear.
I had a feeling that Hicksville didn't deteriorate in quality since I lived there in 2005.
I stopped by Hicksville recently and it still seemed like the nice suburban area it always was.
That's why I felt the need to ask.
People shouldn't be narrow-minded about race- but there's nothing I can really do to change their minds.

There is no there, there
There isn't any real downtown. Surrounding the RR station are a lot of parking lots and mostly empty office buildings...and a coterie of smelly winos/crackheads. There is a pizza place (run by Indians, heh), a Dunkin' Donuts, and a Subway sandwich place... that's it for sitdown eateries. Though I do not live on LI my ladyfriend still lives out there, and I frequently meet her in Hicksville. If I have to wait for her there isn't anything for me to do except hang in the LIRR waiting room.
Suozzi's idea to build something there is excellent. Perhaps, if they build a new, higher capacity parking structure, they could replace some of those dreary parking lots with businesses. There's lots of other vacant/underutilized space.
It's a shame that the mall isn't closer to the RR station. It is a little far to be a comfortable walking distance. Perhaps, some kind of light rail, or people mover?
The Indians have made a pretty good start, a ways down Rt. 109 (?) But the density is still too low for it to be a nice place to walk/shop/spend some time.
I am very much a city man, so that affects my perspective. But when the economy comes back, you will see $5 - $6/gallon gasoline, and farseeing people should be looking to move beyond the automotive suburban lifestyle.

We're looking to upgrade homes soon so we're leaving hicksville but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this town from a living perspective. If you hang out at the train station you may see more activity not typical of suburbia (whatever that may be), but we don't see it in the neighborhoods away from the train station. It's just as peaceful as Plainview streets where I grew up. The landscapes may not be as nice as a Plainview, but that's only a minor difference.
We live down by Holy Trinity. I love that the mall is so close and we frequent that Target all the time. It's close enough without its traffic interfering with our small streets unless you live right near the train station. The train station itself is a 5 minute drive and that's great for the morning everyday. All the conveniences without any of the interference.

I guess everyone forgot about the murders there in the last couple of years. But at least there is good shopping.
