Lynbrook? Pros and Cons
Lynbrook has been an area we recently added to our "seriously considering" list. Admittedly, it's a place I don't know that much about except from stopping by yesterday and doing a little research on the school district and seeing plenty of affordable houses. ($500K or under)
Pros? Cons?

Pro: Conveniently located close to the City, The Airport, The beach, and major expressways like the Southern/Belt and the Cross Island. The downtown area is walkable. The schools are good. The crime is low.
Con: Parking in the village is heavily restricted.

For those who may not be familiar with Lynbrook
Just bear in mind, that not all places that have a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" mailing address (1,549 acres) are in the Village of Lynbrook (1,290 acres).
Here are some recent threads on "Lynbrook":

For those who may not be familiar with Lynbrook:
Lynbrook -- which is Brooklyn spelled inside-out -- is a village (incorporated in 1911) in the central part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lynbrook is bordered on the north by the Village of Malverne and the Hamlet of North Lynbrook; on the east by the Hamlet of Lakeview and the Village of Rockville Centre; on the south by the Village of East Rockaway and the Hamlet of Hewlett; and, on the west by the Village of Valley Stream.
The Village of Lynbrook has a different border than does the "Lynbrook, NY 11563" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" mailing address and not be in the Village of Lynbrook and a place can be in the Village of Lynbrook and have other than a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" mailing address): places that have a "Lynbrook, NY 11563" mailing address that are not in the Village of Lynbrook are in the Hamlet of North Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Hewlett; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Lynbrook that have a "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Stick with Lynbrook SD#20 while searching for a house. It is #1 of the SDs that serve Lynbrook. You are going to pay high taxes anyway so why not pay it for the best SD available in the place you are living in? Here are the other SDs in preference order:
Valley Stream 24 (good enough stats but some may not like any diversity)
Malverne 12 (struggling stats but not the bottom of the barrel)
East Rockaway (low stats and very white so can't always blame minorities for low stats, can we?)

You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) a house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

Sweet!
According to this list, Lynbrook (#20) and Oceanside (#16) are both in the Top 20 for Percentage who plan to attend a 4-year college.
EDIT: John F. Kennedy in Bellmore is ranked #17 according to the list.. S. Bellmore doesn't seem to be quite as affordable as Lynbrook/Oceanside though.

At first, I wasn't really thinking of moving to the South Shore.. but given the high quality of the cheap homes- it seems like a legit possibility.
