For a good, not necessarily top of the line, brand. Cost of compressor plus installation. For a 3 bedroom average size ranch and basement.

It sounds like you need a 3 ton - don't let someone install a size that you don't need - it costs more and it will produce too much cool air if the unit is too big. What you need is to get an AC guy in your house - they'll count the vents, note the square footage, and then tell you if you need a 3 or a two. A guess about the cost would be probably around $2500 give or take including installation. But it will vary from make to make and installer to installer.

What is the existing size in tonnage? Refrigerant? Model of condenser would help. Location of existing condenser, is it ground level, on roof or below grade?

4-6K is wayy to high.

The compressor itself should be between $700-$1200.

Say another $600 for installation.

Here is a 4 ton Copeland Compressor for R-22 for $775.

That's a really good quote you provided, the big question is what type/brand of system is currently installed. My impression is the OP needs to replace the compressor not install from scratch.

Most all the companies use 1 of the 3 major compressor manufacturers. They simply buy it and put it in, they do not manufacturer their own compressor.

Yes, the op can just swap out compressors without changing the whole condensing unit.
