LI - Landfills
Do the LI landfills concern you? Are you aware where they are, or not aware and dont really worry about them?
Just curious, b/c I personally am concerned by them and wonder how much so I should be.
Does anyone know what distance is safe enough to live away from them?

What are you worried about?
Leachate entering the water table, passing into drinking water?
Dust blowing off the fill before it's buried, to be inhaled?
Or...?
I'm not too concerned.

I think I read somewhere LI has one of the highest cancer rates in the country. I would be concerned. But landfills are only part of the reason for the high cancer rates.

I believe the other reason is the chemicals in the ground from all the farming. I personally do not drink the tap water or cook with it. Its not worth it to me.
But I also think no matter where you live, if there were farms there you run the risk. There are landfills everywhere. That is why I love the www.toxicstargeting.com from newsday. Chec,k it out, it is fairly accurate from my research.
I will not buy a house near any of the areas marked as toxic.

They've done numerous studies, and come up dry on any causal link between environmental contamination and LI cancer rates.
I think a lot of it is the high fat diet and sedentary lifestyle prevalent out here.
I checked out that link. They're selling something. The more anxiety, the more dollars.

You dont have to buy anything. Click on the left, toxics site map. Just click by town and the map with all the toxic areas can be seen. You do not have to purchase anything. You can compare the streets with a map of your town and know exactly what is where. Then if something concerns you, you can order a more detailed report. But usually you can go to that location and get an idea of what might be there, or google the area + landfill and records will come up.
