Zoning ordinances for Village of Lake Grove (regarding chicken keeping)
Does anyone have a digital copy of the zoning ordinances for the Village of Lake Grove? I am interested in knowing if there are any ordinances against keeping hens on one's property. I know that the Town of Brookhaven allows a minimal number but I don't know about Lake Grove.
Thanks.

Check the village website and see if they have the link to the village code. Brookhaven allows for 6 birds.

I don't know the code in your village, but I keep a small flock. Good luck, if you need help getting started let me know!

I checked the village website and they don't have it there. I called also to see if perhaps I missed it on the site somewhere. It is not posted. It looks like I am going to have to go directly to them to get it printed. It seems so wasteful to me. Sadly, after having a brief conversation with code enforcement, I am expecting a fight over this. I will continue to post here with my progress for anyone else in Lake Grove that might be interested.

An update if anyone is interested:
I picked up a copy of the village code - but only the part pertaining to animals. The code states:
175-112. Animals.
A. No building, structure or premises shall be erected, altered or used in any residence district for the housing or harboring of fowl, swine, goats, sheep, horses, rabbits, fox or mink except when authorized by special permit from the Village Board.
It then continues on to discuss how many dogs and cats may be domiciled per dwelling unit.
B. No accessory building or structure or any part thereof used for the housing of domestic animals as provided in Subsection A above, other than cats or dogs, shall be less than 50 feet from any lot line in any district.
The code then discusses the keeping of horses and equine livestock. Finally, there is a section that describes the steps that must be taken to apply for a special permit.
I believe that with good preparation it may be possible to obtain a special permit to keep a small number of chickens. Brookhaven allows up to six hens, no roosters. However, I have been told that there is a cost of $500 to apply for the permit and that the Board has never granted one. When I asked how many requests to keep chickens had been made in the past neither the code enforcer or a zoning person could give an answer. I believe that the high application cost is to dissuade people from applying.
I am on the fence now as to whether or not I want to take up this battle. I have no doubt in my mind that the end result if I won would be worth it. However, I have a baby and there are lots of other things that need to be tended to as well. I can not spread myself too thin.
Anyway, if anyone would like a scan of the code PM me and I send it to you. Or, if anyone wants to take up the fight, I would be happy to help in anyway that I can.
Cheers!

Seems like a big hassle to me to get your permit. May I ask why you are even interested in doing this? Having my own chickens is not something I have ever thought about, quite frankly.
Also, I do not know what type of noise or impact they would have on your neighbors, but please consider that as well...

No where near the noise level of one 6lb untrained dog that is allowed by its owners to yap all day.
