Default West Babylon or Lindenhurst?

We will be relocating to Suffolk County and are considering houses in West Babylon and Lindenhurst. Just wondering what everyone thought about these two towns and which was the "better" spot. Any insight appreciated. Thanks!

Both have pros and cons; both best South of Montauk. If you're in the Village of Lindenhurst you have more of a "community" feel.
Take a ride out over the weekend and get a feel for both

Someone offered up excellent advice in a paralell thread. Look in both and pick the place where you find the best house in a neighborhood you like.

Both are good down to earth places to live and raise a family.

greenngold, West Babylon is a hamlet that is governed on an at large basis by the Town of Babylon while Lindenhurst is a self-governing village in the Town of Babylon; and, for both of these communities, a place can have a "West Babylon, NY 11704" or a "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of West Babylon nor in the Village of Lindenhurst, respectively.

In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:

What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".

Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

You can get a fact sheet for any city, village or hamlet on Long Island by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the city, village or hamlet for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".

You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the city, village or hamlet you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.

When you do find a house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

For those folks that "like both, but prefer Lindenhurst", there are places in the Village of Lindenhurst that have a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address.

I agree with you about the community feel of Lindenhurst. Wellwood Avenue has a "Main Street USA" look to it with plenty of small stores, the Village Hall, the Library, the church and the JHS. The post office and railroad station are not too far away. I LOVE the diagonal parking!

Agreed. I like the hometown vibe of the Wellwood Ave strip. West Bab is closer to Bab Village which you'll LOVE if you like Wellwood ave. There are neighborhoods in Bab Village and south of Montauk zoned to WB schools that are priced right as well.

Luke Zing is on a distinguished road
we should be bound for Lindy, just off Wellwood, just north of Montauk.
just waiting on the bank now.

it was a toss up between Lindy and WB for us. It came down to best available deal and timing.

its nice to be reading some good review.

getting excited.
