keep in mind that many use this forum to complain about how LI is too expensive and other related issues. People that complain about what they don't have usually have a problem with the people that are doing well. You'll find a lot of that here...
I understand what you are saying, but much of Syosset is just pleasant middle class living with well kept splits on 65 by 100 lots. It's primarily hard working Italian, Jewish, Greek, Irish, and Asian families. I don't consider it pretentious.
I think it's because they conflate Syosset with the entire school district, which does contain some very pretentious sections (some of the new build sections of Woodbury come to mind).
Some of you are beating around the bush. What is changing about Oceanside?
I used to work in Baldwin but would sometimes go over to Oceanside. Seemed pretty decent although somewhat isolated from the parkways. In fact, that is the only real drawback to me is the "hassle" of going back and forth to the Southern State or Meadowbrook. Having said that, there is a LIRR station and you are not that far from the city.
The southern and newer part of Oceanside actually reminds me of a less crowded more suburban version of Howard Beach (New Howard or Rockwood Park section). Even the stop signs on every block and the stores along the Blvd.

Yes, this describes much of Syosset.
Clearview Village, in particular, reminds me of the nicer areas of Hicksville.

Anyone hear about the houligans breaking in to the vacant house in O'side and shooting the place full of holes with 9MM's?
Cops got them a few blocks away after a chase.
My family moved from Island Park to Woodbury in the 60's. There were a few snobby mothers there who insisted on children calling to arrange to come over for what is now referred to as play dates. I was used to knocking on my friends' doors to see whether they were allowed to come out to play or ride our bikes. It was like culture shock. My mother couldn't stand nouveau riche people. But Oceanside going downhill as it seemed to be when I was on the Island last in the early 2000's hurts. I'm sure any of us from the Island no matter what town they grew up in aren't thrilled with the changes there. I was shocked that A & S wasn't there anymore.
Update: I asked my mom why they moved out of Oceanside ages ago.
One of the reasons was that someone was murdered in their neighborhood...
Another reason was that Oceanside seemed too much like Queens (where my mom was raised).
