Big problem with illegal 'house to share' 'room to rent' -help needed.
This will probably wind up sounding like an episode of 'Soap', but, 8 years I've been dealing with this, so just let me roll. Canaan Lake(North Patchogue)
I move in, $500/mo. room to rent/house to share. LL lives in South Bellport. I work doubles, she asks me for help around the house. I tell her yes, if I can fit it in. Springtime comes - she comes over with a ''honey do'' list it'd take 2 weeks of solid work to do. I tell her I have to work all weekend and she tells me I have to take off to get this stuff done. =o I tell her to hire someone, she winds up being unhappy. *shrug*
I've had ''roomies'' who are lushes (to the point of drinking all my liquor and beer) theives - to this day I can't keep food in the house, someone'll eat it. I buy what I need for the day. Maybe two days. I don't keep liquor or beer in the house at all, now.
How about the i.v. drug user ''roomies'' who have scattered their needles inside and outside the house, or the one that was selling heroin out of his bedroom window. Luckily I work nites, on Friday and Saturday it's like Grand Central Station for druggies!
Nothing is said to them. So, anyway, this guy from Brookhaven stops by and gives notice for broken windows, peeling and missing paint, a 2nd. kitchen (illegal rental unit) yahdah, yadah, yahdah. Boy, if he only knew about the wastewater leakage in the crawlspace. Or the leak in the roof. Or the hopelessly out of code electric service. Or the fact that she rents all the rooms out in this place and lives somewhere else, and has been doing so for more than ten years! Hoo! What kind of fines/tax liability would that be?!
Well, I've got my station wagon, which houses all my tools - I work on cars on the side- yeah that's job #3, two unregistered motorcycles, covered by a tarp and a registered m/c on the property. My car I use in the rain/Winter is parked in the street. We have 6 people living here, only two with vehicles. Well, about 3 weeks ago she asked me to neaten things up and I just haven't gotten to it yet. Now with this happening, her tune's changed. Everything must go. Thing is the 'Town Guy' told me not to worry about it. He said keep the bikes covered and there shouldn't be a problem. *Sigh* I get vacation from both jobs in two weeks, it'd all be straightened out then.
Rent has gone up since I moved in, to $900 ($800 + $100 for a window air conditioner /mo.)
So I guess I'm trying to say that there's a lot of bad LL out there, and a lot of good. You just gotta be careful!
How can I keep my stuff without getting in trouble?

Why would you choose to stay in that situation?

No $.
I don't do drugs, I don't drink any more. I work 2.5 jobs just to keep my head above water. I worked off the books for quite a while, now one check goes for living expenses and food, the other goes into an IRA. The part time stuff I do just to make a little extra money. We just had a healh insurance change at work - the co-pay went up. I can afford the insurance, I can't afford the co-pay!
*sigh*
I get off work @ 6am, go home to shower and change clothes... she's waiting for me, wanting the check and the extra check for the a/c. I told her she'd have to wait for that til next week, that I'd give her the check for the rent. I sat down to take my shoes off, and she demanded that I write the check now!
=o
I told her she could come back later tonight - after 5pm for the check.
Even if I started looking now, it'd take me +/- a month to find a place close to my jobs.

The title of your rant is Big problem with illegal 'house to share' 'room to rent' -help needed. "
Sorry guy, you made your bed here. I'm sure the neighbors were happy to see the town jump in and cite the owner for running an illegal rooming house. The unkept conditions and unregistered vehicles must be a bit unpopular with the neighbors.
I will go out on a limb and speak for the proverbial home owner that lives across the street WOOHOO!!

If you are paying $900 per month there are multiple places you can rent off craigs list with much better living conditions for that or less. Stop the IRA contributions for a few months save a deposit and get the hell out of there. Unfortunately you start to become who you hang out with, live with, or surround yourself with get out and better your life and future.
Tell that slum lord to suck it and stop paying her too then report her ass.

I have to say - something sounds fishy on your end. For $900 per month you could do way better! Why would you stay there?

@ Burb: I guess you're right for the most part - I didn't mention the 12' high shrubbery on one side and the 8' fence behind the car. It's bordered by the house on the other side, so the only thing anyone sees is the nose of a Volvo station wagon :left:
You, in truth, can barely see any thing.
@ Mighty_Quinn: it's 12 minutes to one job, 15 minutes to the other.
@ Stimey01 : yeah, sounds like that's what I'm gonna do...
@ LocalX: Anderson, S.C. For me. FL is too hot!

Hey, thanks all y'all! I just really wanted to vent.
Oh, one more thing: she ''knows'' people @ Brookhaven town Buildings and codes. That's another reason for my anger. Things in 'Crookhaven' don't change, I guess.

A follow up: Apparently, I wasn't moving fast enough for her, so she told everybody in the house that I called the town on her. Now no one asks me for cigarettes or bread. ( I work in a commercial bakery at nite.) I am looking for another place, and the IRS & NYS income tax people are being notified. Once her 'friend' with the town comes by I'll call the original inspector back and invite him in.
I think she called the town on herself, to force the issue.
Just goes to show - never back someone into a corner.
