We are thinking about moving to Long Island with my husbands job. We currently live in Indianapolis, IN we are just looking for some advice from people that live there, we have made bad moves in the past and don't want to do it again. Thanks

What more specifically can we answer?
LI's always in the top 10 places to live in the US surprisingly, for a native. Great beaches, a wee bit of nature (microcosms), LOTS of people (7million in about 1300sq. miles-9-10 million including Brooklyn/Queens), great light rail and great NY 'tude.
Big incomes and big living expenses-think bigger when it comes to $$(get a sizeable raise before you move here). Property taxes average $7000-8000 easily(my folks pay almost 16k and I know a guy paying 36k). Search online for real estate to get familiar.
And the south shore has all the class while the north shore has all the snobs!

Thanks for info
We are just trying to decide what areas are good for raising a family. Is there a lot for kids to do there?

If you want an insanely prices house, huge taxes and lots of traffic, then yes Long Island is a great idea. I cannot wait to move to another part of the country that is affordable. I like Long Island a lot, don't get me wrong. Lots to do and all but it is just so, so expensive.

We live here and love it and hate it at the same time.
We have two boys who are always busy between baseball, soccer, swimming, bowling. It is great as the beaches are nearby, its near NYC for lots of extras and there are two major airports so flying is never a problem.
We hate it because of the taxes. But other than that, we are staying for now.

First, make sure your salary can truly handle the housing costs and taxes. If you are purchasing a house, do not fall for hybrid loans or interest only loans. If you need "fancy" mortgages to afford the house, don't come here.
There are many benefits to LI. Beaches, access to NYC, good schools/colleges, good healthcare system, low crime, decent roads/transportation systems.
The biggest negative is affordability. It certainly is not for everyone.

NLay, It is not that every one is rich. I lived in a working class neighborhood. We all worked and lived for our mortgage. I worked 60 hours a week and ran a small painting business on the side. Fortunately my wife was able to stay home with the kids. Six figures is nothing there. I made well over that and had a 1400 square foot home on a 40 x 100 property. It was 80 years old and sold it well above 1/2 million. (not much for the money eh?) When I lived there I did not fish, boat, or do anything recreational, work, work, work. All of my freinds do the same. Some are fortunate enough to have those 200,000+ a year jobs and things are a little easier for them. Most just struggle. Two salary homes also fair better. The good news is there is work and a bustling economy. It is also an incredibly materialistic environment from the parents right down to 1st grade children

Once again, take everything on this board with a grain of salt.
People here love to generalize about everyone on Long Island. Most are bitter because they can't afford the place. Always try to keep that in mind.
Where is your husband's job going to be? What kind of a commute is acceptable?
