There are many "necessary" jobs. There are many dangerous jobs. Look at the nursing profession and the risks/hours involved. They work holidays and night, same as the cops do. Exposed to diseases , needles left in beds. But do we ever hear them whining that 120k is not enough ? Do we ever hear them whining about working nights and holidays ? Gimme a break.

A police officer's job is just as dangerous in Boston , Los Angeles or San Francisco,where the cost of living is comparable to here. But where else but LI do they pull down such high salaries ? This is not a rocket science profession we are talking about here.

I agree that amount is a bit ridiculous. I know doctors and dentists who make less than that on LI. I know a cop who's retired at 45 and is now a baseball coach. If you think this salary is reasonable, are the cops in all the other areas including NYC severely underpaid?
