I'm not saying it's Ok, but the fact is if you want to live in the tri-state area there is no escaping it.

Most people simply can't find a Job earning what they earn here in the areas of the country with low cost housing. That is why it's cheaper there to begin with.
THis is just another of exampe of people drinking the NYC Koolaid. I mean if you're stuck her because of your job....fine - keep telling yourself that.

My BIL's cousin moved last year from Long Island and makes MORE money where she lives now and OWNS her house - no mortgage.

My sister moved out of state a few years ago - makes more money and OWNs her house.

When I worked for a Fortune 500 company in the 90s they always harped on how they paid us more than other parts of the country...NYC and N. California made the most money, yada yada yada....then we went to the midwest for training at the corporate office and met people from all around the country....people who making a whopping $2000 a year less than us. Whoop dee doo. That's like $50 a paycheck after taxes.

THere are very few industries that are localized to NYC - those are the industries where you can make a lot of money, for just about everything else, don't buy it.
