I also shopped around all the big boys recently in the last month for a house I am purchasing in Port Washington... Statefarm, progressive, GIECO (no coverage), MetLife (no coverage), Allstate (no coverage), and some others. I recieved quotes from Statefarm, pogressive, MetLife as a broker, and Allstate as a broker. Statefarm and progressive were the cheapest and gave decent coverage. I ultimately went with Statefarm because the office was close to my new house, and they were the cheapest.

I just moved into my first home and used Richard Burg Insurance Agency in Freeport. He was hundreds less than any other company I checked out. He even beat the agency I was banking on working with that one of my best friends owns.
As mentioned previously in post #3 of this thread, I use an experienced broker. I'm currently insured with Sterling and quite happy.
BTW, do yourself a favor and make sure you know what the percentage deductible for "wind damage" is. It is often 5% -that can be a substantial deductible! Also, make sure you know at what sustained wind speeds that kicks in.
