First step is to go and apply for the written exam - they'll give you a book that should be studied; in the meantime, someone needs to teach her the ways of the roads before she takes the road test...
Once the written test is passed, you can apply to take a road test.

with a kid and staying a few years you definitely should get a license. In your case, you should probably have her go to a driving school to learn the rules of the road hands-on instead of just from a book and then running out there on her own. Best of luck to you guys.

Lets get real. There is no way I would bike in or around Huntington Village. It is very congested but is probably the best town on Long Island for shopping, eating and art. I would NOT consider Huntington Station, not a nice area. Get a nice apartment in Huntington Village everything is in walking distance.
Good Luck!

You could also consider Oyster Bay, which is pretty close to CSH lab by car. Its a great little town, I used to live there for a couple years right near its center by Audrey Ave. It is smaller than Huntington but they have a train station that is very walkable, though the line is slower then the Huntington LIRR line.
Keep in mind for Greenlawn trains have much less frequency than the trains that terminate at Huntington, since only trains going to Port Jeff will stop at Greenlawn.

I was wondering why no one had mentioned the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, since its downtown commercial area is cyclist friendly.
The geography of the Hamlet of Oyster Bay can be confusing because Oyster Bay is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where most of the places that have the community name as part of their mailing address (7,002 acres) are not in the hamlet (763 acres).
It is important to know that there are 3 "Oyster Bays" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):
1. There is the Hamlet of Oyster Bay (763 acres);
2. There is the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" ZIP Code postal zone (7,002 acres), and it includes the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and parts of 7 villages (municipal corporations) and 1 other hamlet (unincorporated area) within its service area; and,
3. There is the Town of Oyster Bay (70,908 acres), and it includes 18 villages and 18 hamlets as well as the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" ZIP Code postal zone and all or parts of 27 other ZIP Code postal zones, within its borders.
For those who may not be familiar with Oyster Bay:
Oyster Bay is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north most part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Oyster Bay Harbor; on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the south by the Hamlet of East Norwich; and, on the west by the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck.
Oyster Bay is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where most of the places that have the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address that are NOT in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay are in the Village of Centre Island, the Village of Cove Neck, the Village of Oyster Bay Cove, the Village of Laurel Hollow, the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Muttontown, the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck.

Why, Northport Village, of course! Has no one recommended it? Perfect for walking around (beautiful park on the Harbor, boutiques, art, theater on Main Street), great schools and community and right next to Huntington more or less.

Northport is a village (incorporated in 1894) in the northeast part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.

Right next to Huntington not if you don't drive...
Beautiful area - but not particularly good for LIRR purposes, especially without a car

Yes, sorry that is my "car mentality" speaking !
I should say a short car ride away...er, depending on traffic...
You COULD walk to the E. Northport LIRR train station though (er, if you like to walk)....oh, nevermind.
