Um yeah, school staff, superintendents, etc.... are going to want to be paid more for working more hours. Then you got the bus drivers, etc....
This is never going to happen. Too much red tape to go through.

it makes so much sense but as always, it's all about the money.

You're right. Parents would love it as the amount they spend in daycare over the summer will go down. However, the districts will see a rise in costs which means a rise in school taxes we would have to pay. Once the public sees that part, then they'll complain.
If they kept all pay the same and nothing increased then it would just fine.

I think this is going to more useful for the lower income / worst performing districts than the higher performing districts. The students of higher performing districts find ways to keep themselves sharp and occupied. But longer school hours, if implemented so that its useful, will not hurt.
But the teacher contracts etc are a different story. Are teachers paid by hour? If not, longer hours should not increase their pay.

I think its a GREAT idea, school should be 8hrs a day, and at least 220 days per years
and NO we would not have to pay the teachers more...they are paid to teach a SCHOOL YEAR whether that school year is 180 days or 360 days

I think most teachers in the US could use the pay raise, although it's not needed here on LI.
School aids, bus drivers, the cost of Air Conditioning, etc, will all add to the tax bill. So that's a negative.
But, in terms of making us more competitive, I guess it would help.

Even if teacher/administrator salaries stayed the same, I'm assuming there would be other increases that are unavoidable (e.g. energy costs, hourly employees, etc.).
If this ever actually happens, I wonder what affect this would have on the number of people who want to become teachers?

I think it is a briliant idea. I am not going by the money. But I think that the level of education here has fallen dramatically and we need to do something to ensure we have smart, educated, respectful children that will be our future leaders. It is short sighted to just look at the money it would cost ; yes, i know we have to look at the money, but when you see the level of education coming from other countries, it is a disgrace what goes on here. The opportunities are fantastic here once you get out of college ; the world is your oyster. But we need to put our money where our mouths are and go right ahead and make sure these children are being educated ; not just being pushed thru.
Maybe if every child registering at school pays $25 per year that would offset some cost. Maybe make the bus 3/4 mile ; not what it is now. Then we would have children walk and getting excersise which is also a good thing.
I think that the issue is really the quality of education. I am not saying that all children graduating are stupid ; no way, but I think the children are getting too much freedom and they have way to many rights that get in the way.
off my soap box ; yes, I do have children.
